The purpose of the cooperative development program is to grow the SMCEC and accomplish the mission of the organization by growing cooperative education and community-centered development through worker-owned businesses. Program accomplishments include founding and securing long-term funding for the Alabama Center for Employee Ownership, another 501c3 nonprofit, which serves as a central resource hub for employee ownership in Alabama. SMCECs cooperative development team built a national network to support successful employee ownership transitions in Alabama, which includes support from experts and funders. The cooperative development team also performed outreach and education on the social and economic benefits of employee ownership to over 150 people and served 3 Alabama businesses in exploring employee ownership options. This session was in July and was open to returning campers and new campers. The session served 15 campers. Many youth in our service areas lack structured activities in the summer and school year due to institutional deficits, economic limitations, transportation issues, or parental commitments. Program costs associated with Lamplight Summer Camp Session Two which lasted for three weeks and served 15 participants totaled $22,744. These expenses include all aspects of this programming, including buying supplies for community service projects, food, transportation, field trips, insurance, as well as paying staff stipends, housing, and travel expenses. Program costs associated with the Brick and Barn conference and speaker series were $8,761. These expenses include all aspects of this programming, including promotion, food, beverage, conference supplies, as well as speaker stipends and travel expenses. Program costs associated with Glow and Grow, which offers returning camper participants who may be graduating out of the camp system a furthering education in how to run a nonprofit with a focus on fundraising and grant writing, totaled $4,441.
