ONE OF THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS OF 2014 WAS THE LAUNCHED OUR PROGRAM (THE LINK) WITH THE GATEWAY CENTER FOR HOMELESS. THE LINK STARTED OFF AS AN EARN-A-BIKE PROGRAM FOR HOMELESS VETERANS AT GATEWAY. OVER A 6-8 WEEK PROGRAM, HOMELESS VETERANS WERE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN BIKE MAINTENANCE CLASSES, VOLUNTEER AT THE SHOP, AND EARN A BICYCLE FOR THEIR TRANSPORTATION NEEDS. IN 2014, 35 RESIDENTS OF GATEWAY EARNED BICYCLES, WHICH GAVE THEM A MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION TO THEIR JOBS. MOST OF THESE PARTICIPANTS HAVE NOW BEEN ABLE TO SECURE FULL TIME EMPLOYMENT AND MOVE OUT OF GATEWAY. “2014 saw an increase in revenue and in programming for sopo. Previously, we shared our space at 586 woodward avenue with woodward cyclery, a boutique shop. They closed business and we expanded the shop in 2014. This new "front space" has allowed us fix up more bikes for shop expenses and teach a growing number of customers and volunteers new bike maintenance skills. One of the biggest achievements of 2014 was the launched our program (the link) with the gateway center for homeless. The link started off as an earn-a-bike program for homeless veterans at gateway. Over a 6-8 week program, homeless veterans were able to participate in bike maintenance classes, volunteer at the shop, and earn a bicycle for their transportation needs. In 2014, 35 residents of gateway earned bicycles, which gave them a means of transportation to their jobs. Most of these participants have now been able to secure full time employment and move out of gateway. In the final few months of 2014, sopo employed five of these gateway residents and they helped to clean up the shop and fix bicycles. The link secured a 1,300 grant through a creative loafing dogood project to help with the success of this program. Sopo continued to be a valuable community member through partnerships with local nonprofits including atlanta bicycle coalition, east atlanta kids club, macc, the international rescue committee, and several others.”

ONE OF THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS OF 2014 WAS THE LAUNCHED OUR PROGRAM (THE LINK) WITH THE GATEWAY CENTER FOR HOMELESS. THE LINK STARTED OFF AS AN EARN-A-BIKE PROGRAM FOR HOMELESS VETERANS AT GATEWAY. OVER A 6-8 WEEK PROGRAM, HOMELESS VETERANS WERE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN BIKE MAINTENANCE CLASSES, VOLUNTEER AT THE SHOP, AND EARN A BICYCLE FOR THEIR TRANSPORTATION NEEDS. IN 2014, 35 RESIDENTS OF GATEWAY EARNED BICYCLES, WHICH GAVE THEM A MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION TO THEIR JOBS. MOST OF THESE PARTICIPANTS HAVE NOW BEEN ABLE TO SECURE FULL TIME EMPLOYMENT AND MOVE OUT OF GATEWAY. IN THE FINAL FEW MONTHS OF 2014, SOPO EMPLOYED FIVE OF THESE GATEWAY RESIDENTS AND THEY HELPED TO CLEAN UP THE SHOP AND FIX BICYCLES. THE LINK SECURED A 1,300 GRANT THROUGH A CREATIVE LOAFING DOGOOD PROJECT TO HELP WITH THE SUCCESS OF THIS PROGRAM. SOPO CONTINUED TO BE A VALUABLE COMMUNITY MEMBER THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL NONPROFITS INCLUDING ATLANTA BICYCLE COALITION, EAST ATLANTA KIDS CLUB, MACC, THE INTERNATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE, AND SEVERAL OTHERS. |
