Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
We started out the expansion of our programming in the summer of 2023. We collaborated with the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation to launch the "Art and Design" workshop. This program reached out to Hispanic students in Southwest Detroit, a demographic previously not covered by DC's programming. The workshop was designed to immerse students in creative processes and real-world design applications, significantly enriching their educational experience during a period typically marked idleness. We have continued to evolve and expand our offerings to better meet the interests and needs of our students at the Detroit School of Arts (DSA). Our design curriculum has been notably enhanced with the addition of Product Design and Animation Design workshops, reflecting our commitment to the five-year curriculum expansion we initially laid out in 2019. We launched an after-school club at DSA, led by Camila Lenare, a senior from the College for Creative Studies (CCS), in the fall of 2023. Under her tutelage and mentoring, this program has flourished, providing a rich supplement to in-school curriculum. Camila has meticulously developed specific content tailored to the unique needs and interests of the student participants, after conducting individual conversation with each and every student in the beginning stage of the club. "A standout success in our programming is the Fashion Design class, which has quickly become the most popular elective courses among visual arts students at DSA. The inception of the Fashion Design program dates back to the winter semester of 2021, initiated after a quantitative survey conducted in the fall of 2020 identified fashion design as a top choice among students. Our initial offering was an 8-week workshop that provided a high-level overview of the discipline, expertly led by Aki Chocolat, Chair of the Fashion Design Department at the College for Creative Studies. Building on the enthusiastic reception of this workshop, in the winter of 2022, DESIGNCONNECT introduced a full-semester long course titled ""Fashion Fundamentals,"" taught by Gabby Weinkauf. Gabby, a professional designer and adjunct teacher at CCS, brought a practical, hands-on approach to the course. This course continued into the 2022-2023 school year, with more refined and tailored syllabus from Gabby, and culminated in a student-organized runway show that showcased over 20 outfits designed and created by the class participants. Following the success of these initial offerings, the Fashion Design course was expanded to cover the full school year starting in the current 2023-2024 academic year. The fall semester focuses on color and material theories and other foundational aspects of fashion design, while the winter semester concentrates on ready-to-wear design. This expanded format allows for a more in-depth exploration of the field, better preparing our students for future studies or careers in fashion design.$0$50,756

Following the success of these initial offerings, the Fashion Design course was expanded to cover the full school year starting in the current 2023-2024 academic year. The fall semester focuses on color and material theories and other foundational aspects of fashion design, while the winter semester concentrates on ready-to-wear design. This expanded format allows for a more in-depth exploration of the field, better preparing our students for future studies or careers in fashion design.
