IRS990/Desc0In 2024, Prologue Theatre produced two full length productions. Marjorie Prime at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C. and The Horse and Carriage at Prologue's office and rehearsal space in Arlington, VA. Full-length productions require sets, costumes, props, lights, and sound as well as the theatre artists (actors, director, designers, stage manager, and over-hire staff) to create the piece in addition to advertising and marketing for each play and lobby materials for the audience. In addition, for our New Works Program, foreword, we brought together a group of artists to devise and adapt Emil and the Detectives. After conducting the first week of development at Prologue in February, the piece was workshopped at The Kennedy Center for a week in June as a part of their Local Theatre Residency Program and was asked to come back in August for the Local Theatre Festival to present a reading of the piece to an audience. Artist time in June and August as well as puppets and props created for the piece were funded by The Kennedy Center grants. This will likely be a one-time only experience as the programs were discontinued in 2025. Prologue Theatre has continued to experience challenges of filling seats for performances. Although the potential audience size was less, producing on a smaller scale in Arlington in December gave us full control over our own ticket sales as well as realizing the full value of tickets sold less fees (something we do not have when we rent space at Atlas; they control ticket sales and take 10% of the ticket value as part of the rental). Despite it being among our largest costs, we have continued to prioritize maintaining the space we rent in Arlington, VA as appropriate and available commercial space for theatre usage remains virtually nonexistent in our area. Other small theatres recognize the potential we offer in the community and supported us this year with marketing swaps and donations, in addition to grants received from The SHARE Fund, The Lange Foundation, Morgan Stanley GIFT, and Schwab Charitable.

IRS990ScheduleA/FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt0Current Year Facts and Circumstances: Schedule A, Part II, Public Support Schedule, line 5, column (f) for 2020-2023 has been revised by the organization. Prior year returns incorrectly included contributions from a donor advised fund that is recognized as a public charity, one that receives a substantial part of its support from a governmental unit or from the general public described in section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi). The organization therefore meets the 2024 public support test with a public support percentage of 51.51%. Prior Year Facts and Circumstances: Additional information is provided in the PDF attachment to this Form 990 filing: ___________________________________________________________________________________ A: Prologue Theatre received its determination letter just 12 months prior to COVID shutdowns, which, for the theatre industry, continued for almost two years. Those restrictions on in person activity were a significant setback to the organization's initial plans for full length productions and substantially impacted both audience and donor development horizons. ___________________________________________________________________________________ B: Solicitation of public support happens consistently before, during, and after each production and following an audience member's attendance at a performance throughout the performance program and materials in the lobby seen before and after productions in our social media communication throughout the year, as well as during the traditional end of year campaign. However, as audiences have been slow to return to theatre across the region, it impacts the potential donor base. ___________________________________________________________________________________ C: Finding an amenable landlord as well as the type of commercial space to rent that suits the unique needs of a theatre organization initially took nine months the unique nature of the space Prologue Theatre currently rents, which provides for rehearsal, building, storage, and meeting space, while also being a walkable distance from public transportation, makes it a critical component to the viability of the organization. ___________________________________________________________________________________ D: Prologue Theatre's Board is thoughtfully made up not of large donors but individuals with a wide breadth of career experiences, business expertise, community volunteer leadership experiences, and a love and commitment to the performing arts which mirrors many in our local community. ___________________________________________________________________________________ E: Prologue Theatre was recognized by its peers for the quality of its productions, audience experience, and contributions to the theatre community by being named the 2023 John Aniello Award recipient for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company at the Theatre Washington Helen Hayes Awards.
