FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Our mission is to provide a tuition-free, private school for children of families who have experienced homelessness in atlanta. We strive to help families break the cycle of generational poverty by providing children with an excellent education and collaborative family support in a nurturing and faith-inspired environment.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Started in 2015 and incorporated in 2017, the boyce l. Ansley school is dedicated to providing an excellent education to children in the metro atlanta area who have experienced homelessness. Research shows that children experiencing homelessness are at risk of significant uderperformance at school, and this underperformance can last for years after children and their families obtain permanent housing. At the boyce l. Ansley school we believe that children experiencing homelessness can be successful in a school where their unique needs are recognized and met. Tas accomplishes this through small class size (8:1 student/teacher ratio or less), and robust support of students' physical, social, emotional and academic needs through an intensive family support program. Tas does not charge tuition, and transportation, meals and snacks, uniforms and school supplies are provided free of charge. Students also participate in after school and summer programs through our partnership with ymca of metro atlanta. Our family support program offers parents biweekly meetings on subjects such as nutrition, resume building and personal finance, conducts frequent home visits with families and connects families with partners who can offer vital services and support. We work closely with our partners including chris 180, united way, the howard school, ymca of metro atlanta, crossroads community ministries and tacc to provide our students and their families with the services they need to address physical, social, mental and emotional health needs. The 2018-19 fiscal year was a momentous one for the school, as it was our first year of operation, and set us well on our way toward fulfilling the major objective of our first strategic plan, which is to add a grade each year until we are a pre-k through 8th grade school. In august of 2018 we opened our doors to our first class of 12 pre-k students. In may 2019 we finished the school year, with 100% of students who finished the year with us achieving kindergarten readiness, and all but one of our students re- enrolling for our new kindergarten class. On average, 83% of our students missed less than 10% of school days, and 100% of students had at least one parent attend our biweekly parent academy classes. Our board of directors provided leadership for a successful fundraising campaign that increased our donations over 50% year over year. This gave us sufficient funds to add a kindergarten class in august of 2019. The board also held a second strategic planning session in october of 2018, producing a strategic plan that focused on increasing capacity, improving board governance and organizational structure, and student retention. The board is proud of the progress made in its first year of operations, and, guided by feedback from its staff and the families it serves, that its mission is sound.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

Tax-exempt status the organization qualifies as a tax-exempt organization under section 501 (c)(3) of the internal revenue code. Therefore, no provision for income taxes is made in the accompanying financial statements. The organization is not classified as a private foundation. The accounting standard on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under that guidance, the organization may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of the organization and various positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business taxable income (ubit). The tax benefits recognized in the financial statements from such a position are measured based on the largest benefit that has a greater than 50% likelihood of being realized upon ultimate settlement. There were no unrecognized tax benefits identified or recorded as liabilities for fiscal year 2019.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0TAX-EXEMPT STATUS THE ORGANIZATION QUALIFIES AS A TAX-EXEMPT ORGANIZATION UNDER SECTION 501 (C)(3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0OUR MISSION IS TO PROVIDE A TUITION-FREE, PRIVATE SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN OF FAMILIES WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED HOMELESSNESS IN ATLANTA. WE STRIVE TO HELP FAMILIES BREAK THE CYCLE OF GENERATIONAL POVERTY BY PROVIDING CHILDREN WITH AN EXCELLENT EDUCATION AND COLLABORATIVE FAMILY SUPPORT IN A NURTURING AND FAITH-INSPIRED ENVIRONMENT.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1STARTED IN 2015 AND INCORPORATED IN 2017, THE BOYCE L.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3CONFLICTS OF INTEREST ARE DISCUSSED WITH THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE BOARD.
