In 2024, for I Nui Ke Aho's Waa (voyaging canoe) component of our non-profit, we hosted our Na Lei Hulu Waa program in the spring, hosting 103 participants to learn about wahi pana (special places) on the North Shore of Oahu, practicing kilo (observation of natural resources) and learning about the many factors that contribute to safe voyaging. The sites and activities for this program included: 1) celestial navigation at Kahokuwelowelo; 2) waa maintenance and sailing in Waialua Bay, using Wanana Paoa as a platform for learning; 3) water quality testing at Maeaea and Loko Ea with a marine biologist; 4) Beach clean up and seabird education at James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge USFWS; and 5) clearing a loi (paddy for growing kalo or taro). The participants reported a 90 percent increase in connection to place, an 85 percent increase in knowledge of cultural practices, an 85 percent increase in voyaging knowledge and practices and a 95 percent increased interest in caring for land and sea. In 2024 I Nui Ke Aho also hosted 15 community volunteer days to focus on waa maintenance and sailing. We had 484 participants volunteer more than 1237 hours of their time toward care for, learning about and sailing our canoe.$47,280$47,280
