ALTUS Liber Academy is a homeschool co-op. We provide educational classes for the children of 32 families. Our classes cover subjects like history, art, STEM, and writing. We serve children from birth to age 18, as well as their parents. We are a Leadership Education community that gathers together to participate in Scholar Projects and Junior School classes. We use Leadership Education to inspire our members with the vision, mentorship, support, and community they need to discover and live their missions. We meet once a week, 16 days per semester. Mission

ALTUS Liber Academy is a homeschool co-op. We provide educational classes for the children of 32 families. Our classes cover subjects like history, art, STEM, and writing. We serve children from birth to age 18, as well as their parents. We are a Leadership Education community that gathers together to participate in Scholar Projects and Junior School classes. ALTUS Liber Academy offered weekly educational classes for 16 weeks for 32 families. Each week, we ran 29 classes for 110 children aged 0 to 18. Class offerings included art, physical education, constitutional law, Shakespearean acting, writing, and literature analysis, among others.$0$8,553

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0ALTUS Liber Academy submitted a written request dated 3/23/23 to change our accounting period from a calendar year to a fiscal year. However, we never received confirmation that this request was granted. We never received any notices informing us that our tax due date had changed or that our accounting period had changed or that we needed to file taxes for a short year. I believed that we were still on a calendar year and that, as usual, I would need to file a 990N e-postcard in summer 2023. I went to the IRS website multiple times to try to submit a 990N e-postcard in summer 2023, but each time the website stated, "IRS records indicate that you have already filed a Form 990N (e-Postcard) for this organization for this year." Since we received no confirmation that our accounting period had changed, we assumed that we were still on a calendar year and that taxes had already been filed (our governing board members changed that summer as well). On January 30, 2024, I again tried to submit our 990N e-postcard for 2023. However, the website again stated, "IRS records indicate that you have already filed a Form 990N (e-Postcard) for this organization for this year." Since I knew that was untrue, I called the IRS and learned that our accounting period had indeed been changed to a fiscal year and that we needed to submit a 990EZ form for the short year of Jan 1, 2023 to June 30, 2023. We request that all late filing penalties and interest accrued be abated, since we were unaware that our accounting period had changed.
