Kellogg BBI - In 2023, BE NOLA launched the pilot cohort of the Black Is Brilliant Institute, a six-month paid fellowship for New Orleans classroom and community educators that guides fellows in an experiential journey of wellness, learning, and doing. The Institute focuses on five pillars: Black Educational History, Health and Wellness, Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Holistic Curriculum, and Communal Infrastructure Building. Fellows received a stipend and graduated from the Institute with an expansive network, a greater understanding of culturally relevant pedagogy and the history and context of Black education in New Orleans, and increased access to places, spaces, and modalities of healing and wellness for themselves and the 2200+ students they collectively impact. 2023 Fellows would recommend the Institute at an average rating of 9.78 on 10 point scale. 96.5 indicated a growth of their support networks 100 reported an increase in their understanding of historical Black education in the city of New Orleans 100 of participants stated they felt motivated to remain in education as a result of the Institute.--
Goldman Sachs BE NOLA?s annual citywide education summit provides a space at the beginning of the school year to affirm the connection and shared purpose of our education community in New Orleans, examine timely education issues from a strength-based lens, and connect educators to resources and support organizations in the broader village.? It embodies BE NOLA?s mantra that ?education is a lifestyle? by going beyond the four walls of a classroom to connect culture and education. The fourth year of the Summit included a virtual program, an in person education hub located on New Orleans? historic ?Black Wall Street of New Orleans,? Bayou Road, which also correlated with National Black Business Month, and virtual viewing locations at Black-owned businesses across the city. More than 700 educators, parents and community members registered to participate in the 2023 Summit and attendees said they would recommend the program at an average rating of 9.07 on 10 point scale. The 2023 Summit generated 257 pieces of media coverage and an economic impact of more than $200K with over 80 of dollars going to local DBEs.--
1954 Program: 2023 BE NOLA Collective For the past five years, BE NOLA has provided financial and capacity-building support to schools in New Orleans that are founded, led, and operated by Black educators via our unique BE NOLA Collective School Support Program. To date, this program has supported 10 schools, 25 school leaders, and more than 125 teachers. The 2023 BE NOLA Collective school leaders traveled to Philadelphia for the program?s annual out-of-town convening. The two-day trip was a professional development experience for the BE NOLA Collective school leaders to network with and learn from national leaders practicing liberatory approaches in education storytelling, fundraising, and school operations. In 2023, BE NOLA completed a case study of our BE NOLA Collective partner schools to answer the question: What characteristics make them unique and necessary to Black parents and families in New Orleans? According to the BE NOLA case study, some key characteristics include: Focus on cultural relevance and responsiveness: Black-led, Black-governed schools incorporate culturally relevant curriculum, instruction, and policies that are sensitive to the cultural backgrounds and experiences of Black students and families. They aim to combat the sustained erasure of Black cultural and political achievements. Emphasis on identity and agency: Black-led, Black-governed schools provide experiences that empower students' sense of personal and racial identity and ability to create positive change. This includes role modeling and leadership opportunities. High expectations: While promoting cultural relevance, Black-led, Black-governed schools also hold students to high academic standards and provide rigorous, supportive learning environments. Trust and community: Foundational to the Black-led, Black-governed school model is establishing trust and a sense of belonging among students, families, and educators. This primes students and stakeholders for meaningful academic and social engagement. Innovation in pedagogy and environment: Black-led, Black-governed schools demonstrate innovation in their approaches to teaching and the overall learning environment to best serve their student populations and surrounding communities. The case study was shared with people in our network to provoke interest in further defining, measuring, and evaluating the assets and effective practices of Black-led, Black-governed schools to promote inclusive models for advancing educational equity in New Orleans and beyond. Our 2023 BE NOLA Collective School partners collectively impact more than 3000 students and all improved their school performance scores by 4-18 pts. 2023 BE NOLA Collective School said they would recommend the program at an average rating of 9.125 on 10-point scale.--
