“The birmingham committee on foreign relations hosts monthly discussions with the nation's top foreign policy experts. In 2018, we hosted nine dinner discussions with on average 75 members and guests in attendance at each event. We often subsidize the cost of attending lectures for young professionals and students-all in an effort to ensure birmingham's next generation has access to the country's top thinkers in foreign policy. Our 2018 speakers included council on foreign relations senior fellow alyssa ayres, ambassador vicki huddleston, ambassador richard lebaron, general chuck krulak, council of the americas' eric farnsworth, and brookings institution fellow tanvi madan, among others. All events allow ample time for guests to interact with the expert speaker and ask questions to facilitate greater learning and understanding. Additionally, because of our committee, birmingham is becoming known to foreign policy experts in d.c. As a great place to visit - with exceptionally well-informed locals, great restaurants, and thought provoking historical and cultural sites. When visiting birmingham, we almost always take our guests to the birmingham civil rights institute followed by lunch at chez fon fon. When time allows, we set up additional meetings and speaking opportunities for our guests in order to maximize the visit - and in order to make sure as many people as possible are reached with the message of our speakers. As often as possible, we collaborate with area colleges and universities, as well as civic organizations such as the indian cultural society and the rotaract club. We want our speakers to be positively blown away by birmingham. No other organization in the birmingham region comes close to providing the depth and breadth of foreign policy insight and engagement as the bcfr. Our members and guests benefit from learning from the very best and brightest minds in foreign policy - and all of this is organized by a fully volunteer board and no full-time staff.”
