Mission

Our west bayfront's mission is to enhance the quality of life in erie's west bayfront neighborhoods by promoting civic involvement, thoughtful development, historical preservation, and neighborhood pride. Owb's core activities including improving housing conditions by assisting property owners with repairs, eliminating blight, enhancing public parks and vacant lots, improving safety and security, and coordinating activities and events that strengthen neighborhood relationships.

THE RENOVATION OF 404-06 WEST 8TH STREET, A MIXED-USE HISTORIC PROPERTY ON THE WEST 8TH STREET COMMERCIAL CORRIDOR CREATED NEW OFFICE AND COMMUNITY SPACE FOR OWB, HAS BECOME A HUB FOR COMMUNITY ACTIVITY, AND IS ANCHORING A SERIES OF INVESTMENTS TO THIS CORRIDOR. DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR OWB ALSO WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE LAND BANK AND GANNON UNIVERSITY TO IDENTIFY THREE ADDITIONAL VACANT PROPERTIES THAT ARE SLATED FOR RENOVATION. THE TRANSFORMATION OF THESE PROPERTIES CONTRIBUTES TO OWB'S TARGETED REVITALIZATION GOALS AND HELPS TO STABILIZE THE MARKET IN THE TRANSITIONAL NEIGHBORHOODS THAT OWB SERVES.

THESE IMPROVEMENTS ENCOURAGE USE OF PARKS AND PUBLIC SPACES, HELP RESIDENTS FEEL SAFER AND MORE COMFORTABLE IN PUBLIC SPACES, AND GENERALLY ENHANCE THE APPEAL OF THE COMMUNITY. IN 2020-2021 OWB CONTINUED WORK AT BAYVIEW PARK, AN IMPORTANT NEIGHBORHOOD PARK THAT WAS NOT MEETING THE NEEDS OF THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOOD. PROJECTS INCLUDED THE CREATION AND INSTALLATION OF THE PONTIACS, A MURAL CELEBRATING THE HISTORIC PONTIAC FIELD WHERE MANY WELL-KNOWN BLACK BASEBALL PLAYERS PLAYED THROUGHOUT THE 1900S. ALSO AT BAYVIEW PARK, SWINGING BENCHES OVERLOOKING THE BLUFF AND BASKETBALL COURT LIGHTING WAS INSTALLED. AT NEARBY CASCADE PARK, WORK BEGAN ON A NEW SCULPTURAL GATEWAY THAT CONNECTS THE WATERFRONT WITH THE NEIGHBORHOOD. OWB WORKED WITH RESIDENTS AND NUMEROUS PARTNERS TO CREATE "PEOPLE'S PARK," WHICH TRANSFORMED A VACANT TRASH-STREWN LOT TO A PEACEFUL RESTING PLACE, WITH PORTRAITS OF 50 COMMUNITY MEMBERS ETCHED IN WOOD SURROUNDING PICNIC TABLES AND NEWLY PLANTED TREES. OWB ALSO WORKS CLOSELY WITH RESIDENTS TO IMPROVE SAFETY AND SECURITY. THE "LIGHTS ON OWB" PROGRAM INVOLVES DISTRIBUTION OF LED BULBS FOR RESIDENTS TO INSTALL ON THEIR PORCHES.
