The Center at West Park is a home for arts, culture, and community in the landmark West Park Presbyterian Church on the Upper West Side in Manhattan. The Center is a secular not-for-profit organization that offers a diverse range of programs for artists, audiences, and the neighborhood; manages the buildings facilities; and stewards the restoration of its historic exterior. The mission of the Center is to build a more inclusive community in the Upper West Side neighborhood and all of New York City by presenting diverse, engaging, and boundary-pushing artistic and cultural programming; providing affordable performance, rehearsal, and event space to local artists and community members; and preserving the West Park Presbyterian Churchs historic edifice. The Center aims to create and maintain a vibrant cultural hub, a forum for conversations and connections that transcend barriers to address the important issues facing our society today.

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | In our second year, The Center at West Park presented numerous performances of theater and puppetry through our Artist Residency Programs; provided affordable performance, rehearsal, and administrative space for other arts organizations and individual artists through our Space Rental Program; and launched the Landmark Restoration Campaign to restore and preserve the historic facade of the West Park Presbyterian Church. Artist Residency Programs. In 2018, we provided residencies to 22 performing arts companies and self-producing artists, serving over 250 individual artists, presenting 94 public performances, and engaging over 7,000 audience members. These resident artists and their projects include the Loire Valley Theater Festivals TURNING 15 ON THE ROAD TO FREEDOM by Linda Blackmon Lowery, Anonymous Ensembles LIEBE LOVE AMOUR!, SXRVXVE: An Art Space, THE RECRUITING OFFICER by George Farquhar, BLACK PANTHER WOMEN and ANTIGONE ASSATA SHAKUR by Jacqueline Wade, Hamlet Isnt Deads MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and JULIUS CAESAR, spit&vigors MOTH & FLAME by Sara Fellini, Bread and Puppets BASIC BYEBYE SHOW, Linked Dance Theatres BELOVED/DEPARTED, Lotte Arnsbjerg and Carman Moores TRANSFORMATION FESTIVAL, Inspire Choirs VOICE DANCE: A CHORAL CELEBRATION, a benefit performance by Parvathy Baul, and the weekly sessions of the NYC Seed Group. The Center also produced the OBJECT MOVEMENT PUPPETRY FESTIVAl, which showcased eight original puppetry and object theater pieces developed at the Center over a nine month residency, and the FURNACE FESTIVAL, which presenting workshops of four new plays. Space Rental Program. The Center provided affordable rehearsal and performance space for numerous theater and dance companies, music ensembles, independent artists and filmmakers, to create and share their work. Performances and events at the Center made possible by this program include the 2018 New York Shakespeare Convention, a concert by the Young New Yorkers Chorus, Village Light Opera Groups RUDDIGORE, New Amsterdam Operas LA FAVORITA, and Kidz Theaters JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. We also provided affordable long-term office and studio space to the exemplary and critically-acclaimed performing arts companies Noche Flamenca, Shen Wei Dance Arts, On Site Opera, and the Russian Arts Theater and Studio, as well as thousands of hours of short-term rehearsal and meeting space for dozens of theater, dance, and musical artists and groups. In partnership with Shen Wei Dance Arts, the Center provided non-profit dance companies and independent dancers and choreographers based in New York State with over 1,400 of hours of subsidized rehearsal space for only $10 per hour. We continued to provide affordable space for community activities, including weekly meetings for several support groups and visual arts classes from Upper West Arts. Landmark Restoration Project. The Center launched the Landmark Restoration Campaign with the community outreach event and fundraiser PLANTING A SEED, which coincided with the West 80s Neighborhood Associations Love Your Street Tree Day and the annual street fair at our corner on W 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue on May 20. With the support of the New York Landmarks Conservancy, we put together a thorough request for proposals for the restoration of the West Park Presbyterian Church facade and distributed the RFP to a selection of highly qualified and well-recommended architecture firms. Proposals from two top firms were carefully reviewed by a committee of board members, community stakeholders, and experts in the field, and the committee accepted the proposal from Page Ayres Cowley Architecture, LLC. During the year, we also completed several important maintenance projects, including repairing cracks in the Sanctuary Theater ceiling, cleaning out the buildings iconic belltower, repairing uneven areas of the sidewalk outside the building, and replanting the sidewalk tree beds. The Center is a secular not-for-profit organization that offers a diverse range of programs for artists, audiences, and the neighborhood; manages the buildings facilities; and stewards the restoration of its historic exterior. The mission of the Center is to build a more inclusive community in the Upper West Side neighborhood and all of New York City by presenting diverse, engaging, and boundary-pushing artistic and cultural programming; providing affordable performance, rehearsal, and event space to local artists and community members; and preserving the West Park Presbyterian Churchs historic edifice. The Center aims to create and maintain a vibrant cultural hub, a forum for conversations and connections that transcend barriers to address the important issues facing our society today. |
