The executive director is hired by the board of directors who conducts salary negotiations, and their decision regarding hiring and compensation are recorded in the board minutes. The executive director hires other staff and contrators and selects the best candidate for a given job within the board approved budget. Any deviation from the approved budget requires board approval along with an explanation for why the deviation from budget is necessary (this may include the lack of available qualified candidates at the compensation level offered).”

Since that time we have provided legal representation in criminal and civil cases, legal education and other legal support and advocacy to the water protector movement utlitizing staff and volunteer legal service workers and attorneysall over turtle island. Our criminal defense program work includes legal education, advocacy, jail support, case coordination and criminal defense representation. Our civil right program work includes education, advocacy, outreach and civil legal repesentation to those harmed or at risk of harm by excessive use of force and other misconduct by law enforcement or private military contractors and in defense of indigenous sovereignty and sacred sites. Wplc also engages with international human rights mechanisms on behalf of indigenous human rights defenders.”
