Governance Explanations

It is the policy of building futures that the board's responsibilities include review and approval of the annual audited financial statements and form 990.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

On a regular basis, the finance/audit committee of the board shall ensure compliance with the policies described herein by reviewing actual practices and comparing them to those mandated by this manual. The committee shall meet with staff and review such documentation as is required to accomplish a meaningful review. Reviews should be scheduled to ensure that there is annual review of compliance with all significant financial and accounting policies.

By practice, executive director compensation is set by the board of directors. The organization uses form 990 of other organizations and compensation surveys to establish the compensation of the organization's executive director.

Building futures makes the following forms readily available to all members of the general public: 1. The public information copies of the 3 most recent fiscal years of our form 990; and 2. Building futures original application for recognition of its tax-exempt status (form 1023) filed with the irs, and all accompanying schedules and attachments. Building futures posts on its website that these forms are available by request for visual inspection at the organization's offices during normal working hours, monday through friday.

Uncertainty in income taxes the organization recognizes the effect of income tax positions only if those positions are more likely than not to be sustained. Management has determined that the organization had no uncertain tax positions that would require financial statement recognition of disclosure. The organization is no longer subject to examinations by the applicable taxing jurisdictions for periods prior to the 2015 return year.

THE MAIN COMPONENTS OF THE PROGRAM ARE: RECRUITMENT, ORIENTATION, APPLICATION & ASSESSMENTS, CONSTRUCTION TRAINING, CONSTRUCTION MATH INSTRUCTION, PERSONAL FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, CAREER GUIDANCE, PLACEMENT & SUPPORT SERVICES. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO OFFERS A SPECIAL TRACK IN HOME BUILDING THAT PROVIDES AN EXTENDED HANDS-ON TRAINING OPPORTUNITY BUILDING MODEL ENERGY-EFFICIENT AFFORDABLE LOW-INCOME HOMES IN PROVIDENCE NEIGHBORHOODS. IN ONGOING EFFORTS TO INCREASE THE DIVERSITY AND NUMBER OF QUALIFIED CANDIDATES FOR CONSTRUCTION APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS, THE ORGANIZATION HAS INCREASED ITS FOCUS ON RECRUITMENT, TRAINING, PLACEMENT AND RETENTION OF WOMEN IN THE TRADES, BOTH BY ESTABLISHING AN ALUMNI LEADERSHIP WORKING GROUP TO ASSIST WITH OUTREACH AND RECRUITMENT, AND VIA A MENTORSHIP PROGRAM FOR WOMEN TRAINEES AND GRADUATES. BUILDING FUTURES SERVES AS THE STATE'S APPRENTICESHIP INTERMEDIARY, PROVIDING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND RESOURCES TO EMPLOYERS TO BOTH DESIGN, LAUNCH AND OPERATE REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS IN OCCUPATIONS ACROSS MULTIPLE SECTORS INCLUDING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, ADVANCED MANUFACTURING, HEALTH CARE, MARINE TRADES, LANDSCAPE HORTICULTURE, AND OTHERS. TO DATE, 50 APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS HAVE BEEN REGISTERED WITH THE STATE, EMPLOYING 860 APPRENTICES, AND INVOLVING 65 EMPLOYER SPONSORS AND ASSOCIATIONS.THESE ACTIVITIES REFLECT A NATURAL EXPANSION OF BUILDING FUTURES' WORK TO BETTER ACHIEVE ITS MISSION WHILE REPLICATING ITS EFFECTIVE WORK IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDE ASSISTING COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS TO DESIGN, LAUNCH AND OPERATE NEW PRE-APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS SIMILAR TO THE BUILDING FUTURES MODEL OF PRE-APPRENTICESHIP FOR CONSTRUCTION.
