“UPON REQUEST”
“Since the organization's inception in 2016, 314action has cultivated a grassroots community of over 600,000 scientists, stem professionals, and advocates who care about science and facts. Specifically, 314action has held five nonpartisan trainings for scientists and stem professional who are interested in running for office. 314action's two 2018 candidate trainings took place in chicago on april 20-21, 2018 and in san francisco on july 20-21, 2018. Both candidate trainings took place over two days. Participants were given 314action candidates textbook/training manual and specifically designed course curriculums for scientists and stem professionals running for office. The textbook acts as a guide/handbook for stem professionals interested in running for office. The textbook covers topics such as messaging, earned and paid communications, fundraising, budgeting, get-out-the- vote, and several other key pillars of campaigning. For example, in the messaging chapter of the textbook, the organization explains how to develop a message, how to create a winning slogan, how to stay on message, and why messaging is so crucial to a successful campaign. The two-day trainings are an exhaustive, intensive training that attempts to put participants in real campaign scenarios. Additionally, these participants are taught how to set up a campaign, hire staff, determine a message, build a fundraising plan, budget, target voters, and more. 314action has a dedicated staff person who works throughout the year on scouting locations, working with allied organizations, and connecting with potential trainees. These trainings help promote the responsible use of data-driven, fact-based approaches in public policy by educating future leaders on how science has been neglected in current public policy, and what they can do to correct it. Additionally, 314action aspired to start a non-partisan voter registration pilot program in 2018. However, the organization ultimately lacked the resources required to launch a fully funded state wide registration program. Instead, 314action partnered with mi familia vota's registration drive. 314action made a contribution in order to aid an effort to register hispanic voters in nevada. The organization's criteria for choosing this population in this location was to show that a science-based organization supports the registration of voters of all backgrounds, and that policy participation from people outside of the traditional urban centers is important to a broad-based policy discussion. As part 314action's overall mission to recruit and train citizens to advocate on behalf of core issues relating to science, climate and data-driven research. 314action recruited and trained over 75 college campus chapters across the nation. 314action staff connects with college students throughout the united states. These college campus chapters help to foster and encourage the next generation of stem leaders who understand the intersection of science and public policy. 314action's goal is to give students the tools to organize and be effective advocates for science. As further explanation, as part of 314action's efforts to organize and engage scientists and pro science advocates, 314action helped create and facilitate local chapters on college campuses. The lead person for 314action was harmony knutson, director of advocacy. The college chapters were encouraged to hold regular meetings, maintain attendance lists/contact information, and ensure compliance with their university's policies regarding student groups. With harmony's guidance, each college chapter created an issues curriculum that helped educate students on both local and national issues affecting the stem community. The college chapters engaged in training students on the basics of organizing, both on- and off- campus, as well as efforts to organize phone-banks, canvasses, letter-writing events, and voter registration. As part of their efforts, the chapters held candidate forum”

| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 0 | SINCE THE ORGANIZATION'S INCEPTION IN 2016, 314ACTION HAS CULTIVATED A GRASSROOTS COMMUNITY OF OVER 600,000 SCIENTISTS, STEM PROFESSIONALS, AND ADVOCATES WHO CARE ABOUT SCIENCE AND FACTS. AS PART OF THEIR EFFORTS, THE CHAPTERS HELD CANDIDATE FORUM |
