These publications served as key channels for connecting the local Taiwanese community at the time.Despite suppression from the Kuomintang government, membership in the association not only persisted but grew steadily starting in the 1980s. The range of events also became increasingly diverse. In addition to social gatherings, lectures, concerts, and exhibitions, the association hosted the 6th Annual Convention of the World Federation of Taiwanese Associations in 1979.After Taiwan lifted martial law in 1987, the associations activities became even more vibrant. Along with continuing past traditions, the annual 228 Memorial Event gradually became a regular feature. Each year, members commemorate Taiwans history over a bowl of squid porridge.Since 2001, in celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month each May, the association has hosted performances and exhibitions to introduce Taiwanese culture to the American mainstream.Over the decades, as Taiwan and American society have continued to evolve, the Greater Seattle Taiwanese Association has also adapted in form and focus. In 2019, the association officially registered in Washington State as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, aiming to secure more resources for promoting Taiwanese culture. In 2023, the association commissioned a professional designer to create a new emblem. Using Seattles iconic emerald green, the design blends images of the Space Needle, orcas, the Formosan black bear, and the map of Taiwan symbolizing the strong connection across the Pacific Ocean.Looking ahead, the Greater Seattle Taiwanese Association hopes to continue thriving and to serve the local Taiwanese community for many years to come. | - | - |
