Mission

Our mission is to support the public in maintaining poise, dignity, and personal growth throughout all stages and challenges of life by using the principles of Alexander technique (AT). We are committed to removing barriers to access and making Alexander technique training accessible across broad socioeconomic groups including people living with chronic conditions, their family care partners, and children and youth.

Conferences Attended with Symposium Presentations, Exhibiting and Continuing Ed Trainings. 1. 6th World Parkinson Congress, Barcelona, Spain, July 2023. Participated in four day conference in Barcelona. Over 2,600 delegates attended from over 60 countries, including medical professionals, allied health professionals, researchers, people living with Parkinson's, care partners, and support group leaders. We presented a research poster, Partnering with Poise, Retention of cognitive, emotional, and physical benefits for care partners of people living with Parkinson's disease at 6 and 12 months after completion of an in person Alexander based group course. We also led a lovely Partnering with Poise 90 minute workshop for over 20 care partners in the Care Partner Lounge, a sanctuary dedicated to the care of the many care partners attending the conference. This was followed by a well attended 60 minute Poised for Parkinson's workshop in the Renewal Room, a space dedicated to the well-being of people living with Parkinson's in attendance from around the world. 2. International Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Society Conference, Copenhagen Denmark, August 2023. Had a four member Poise Project Team to advocate for AT at a five day conference in Copenhagen. 5,200 delegates attended from 105 countries, including medical professionals, allied health professionals, and researchers. TPP Team had AT teachers from Copenhagen, Ireland, and England. We had a nonprofit exhibit table with materials and networked with delegates and exhibitors. We were among 15 nonprofit and 49 for profit exhibitors there. 3. 33rd Alzheimer Europe Conference, Helsinki Finland, October 2023. Participated in three day conference in Helsinki. Over 1,100 delegates attended from 48 countries including medical professionals, allied health professionals, researchers, people living with dementia, and family care partners. Gave an oral presentation as part of a panel titled Informal Carer Support and Training. The presentation was titled Partnering with Poise, Retention of benefits 12 months after Alexander technique online group course for care partners of people living with dementia. It was attended by over 70 delegates, including care partners of people living with dementia, clinicians, and researchers from across Europe and beyond. 4. 100th American Congress for Rehabilitation Medicine conference, Atlanta GA, October 2023. Attended six-day in person conference in Atlanta. Led a four hour Instructional Course, titled Alexander Technique, An Innovative Cognitive Embodiment Approach for Clinical Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Practice, in the Preconference. Was a poster judge for top conference research posters. Attended numerous networking group community meetings. Helped prepare and present the following five 60 minute panel symposiums, a. Advancements in Rehabilitation Sciences: Progress Report from the Alzheimer's Disease". b. Rehabilitation's Role in Supporting People Living with Long COVID19 Related Breathing Problems. c. Recommendations for Physical Activity and Exercise at Home for Patients and Caregivers After a Stroke. d. State of the Science, Supporting Academic Development, Social Development and Emotional Health in Adolescent Athletes. and e. Community engaged Trauma informed Care in Refugee and Asylum Seeker Rehabilitation Programming in North America. 5. Integrative Medicine for the Underserved 13th Annual Conference titled Decolonizing Medicine, Recentering Climate Health and Equity in the Spectrum of Care, Austin TX. November 2023. Participated in three day conference. Led a 30 minute experiential workshop titled Alexander Technique, Refreshing Your I am. Networked with integrative medicine clinicians who focus on providing health care for underserved, low income, and marginalized communities. Discussed potential partnerships with The Poise Project for group medicine program delivery of Alexander technique in their clinics. 6. 5th Pan American Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Congress, Cartegena Colombia, February 2024. Attended three day in person conference. Presented research poster titled Importance of informal care partner participation in interventions for people living with Parkinson's disease. Our poster was selected for a special Poster Tour, and an oral presentation was delivered. Had a team that exhibited at our nonprofit table. Conference was attended by 560 delegates from 29 countries. 7. King's College Student Mental Health Conference, London UK, June 2024. A collaboration between The Poise Project and The Developing Self UK. We attended a three day in person conference. Led a workshop presentation titled Embodied Agency, An introduction to Alexander technique as a student mental health intervention. The workshop included a 25 minute didactic presentation with research and background on AT and 45 minutes of experiential activity with time for Q and A afterwards. Many excellent connections made with university mental health professionals and charities, with interest in following up with possible feasibility trials of AT programming. Conference was attended by 130 professionals in the mental health field, both researchers and clinicians.$0$17,605
Professional Continuing Ed Trainings: 1) Led 6 in-person and online "Poised for Parkinson's" workshop curriculum trainings. 20 instructors were trained. 2) Led 2 in-person and online "Partnering with Poise" workshop curriculum training. 8 instructors were trained. 3) Led 5 Alexander technique for Parkinson's Basic Training courses online. 59 instructors were trained.$0$17,543

The Poise Project had an AFA Member Nonprofit exhibit table and team presence to advocate to care partners and people living with dementia about Alexander technique programs, including the "Partnering with Poise" program. Contact information for care partners was gathered for our courses. 2) Alzheimer's Foundation of America "Educating America Tour: Salt Lake City Alzheimer's & Caregiver Conference, May 15 Salt Lake City UT.
