Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To empower individuals, transform lives and build community through the sport of rowing. In 2017 our programs served two populations, youth who have limited resources and adolescents and adults with physical disabilites.

Form 990-EZ, Part III - Organization's Primary Exempt Purpose: The mission of North Star Community Rowing is to empower individuals, transform lives, and build community through the sport of rowing. In 2024, NSCR provided indoor rowing training and on-the-water rowing programs to those in the community who have been traditionally excluded from the sport including people with physical disabilities and those who lack financial or geographic access to rowing at private rowing clubs in the Twin Cities.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line 28 North Start Community Rowing (NSCR) significantly grew programing in 2024. All three program areas; Indoor rowing, Race Training/Racing, and on the water rowing increased both the number of athletes served, and the number of program hours provided. This is attributable to an increase in both the number of older people joining as Adaptive athletes and the number of people joining the Community program because they lack financial access to rowing at private clubs. NSCR has also seen an increase in the number of US Veterans who join as Adaptive and Community athletes as they pursue fitness and recreation activities post-pandemic through Freedom Rows program. Freedom Rows, a partnership between USRowing and the United States Veterans Administration, provides grants to support rowing training for injured US Veterans. NSCR is the only Freedom Rows program in the region. The 2024 Indoor Rowing program was held at Base Camp in Fort Snelling/Bloomington MN through a partnership with Northern Star Scouting. 21 weeks of programing was offered in 2024 versus 12 weeks in 2023. Participation increased significantly to 13 unique Adaptive athletes, 1 unique Adaptive/Veteran athlete, and 8 unique Community athletes, for a total of 410 indoor training programming hours for the year, a 19% increase versus 2023. All 2024 NSCR On-The-Water rowing programming was held at Silverwood Park/Silver Lake in St. Anthony MN through a partnership with the Three Rivers Park District. (NSCR's Upper Harbor Mississippi Access remained closed in 2024 due to the Upper Harbor redevelopment project). NSCR had a record number of athletes interested in racing at the Minneapolis Sprints regatta held in June on Lake Nokomis. A four-week race training program was held at Silver Lake to prepare athletes for competition. 5 adaptive athletes raced in the regatta cheered on by the many representatives in the NSCR community. The 2024 rowing season at Silver lake was the largest ever for NSCR. The season was increased to 12 weeks from 10 weeks in the past, and a third day of programming was added during the first session. The 2024 rowing season participation grew 14 unique Adaptive athletes, 1 unique Adaptive/Veteran athlete, 8 unique Community athletes, and 2 Community/Veteran athletes for a total of 270 on the water rowing training hours for the year, an increase of 35%. The growth and success of NSCR programming during 2024 was made possible by the team of dedicated coaches and staff, and with the help of volunteers who contributed over 485 hours of program support.$0$0
