Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
For the 2024 tax year, the TZL Chapter, along with the TZL Scholarship Fund (The Fund), presented 15 high school seniors from the Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and surrounding areas, with $1,500 scholarships. Our (TZL Chapter) contribution to this effort was $10,000. Since The Fund's inception in the mid-80's, we have helped to give out 232 scholarships, worth a grand total of $216,000. In November of 2014, the TZL Scholarship Fund Trust, which was established in 1985, was re-established as an IRS 501(c)(3) public charity to receive tax deductible endowment gifts.$0$10,000
The second expense driven program that our chapter funds is our Caring and Sharing program for needy families. Three times a year, the Brothers from TZL provide food baskets and gift cards to families in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area that require assistance in providing some of the basic essentials for their families. In 2024, our Caring and Sharing Program helped 95 families at Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas at a cost of $3,367.47. (Note: in the past, our chapter filed the 990-ePostcard. For the 2024-25 fraternal year, my first year as Chapter Treasurer, I realized that we had to start filing a Form 990-EZ because of the total revenue that flowed into TZL coffers for 2024, and for years 2022 and 2023). I would like to provide some previous data with respect to our Caring and Sharing Program. For the tax year of 2023, 85 families were helped over the same three holiday seasons at a cost of $2,739.39. For the tax year of 2022, we were able to provide assistance to 88 families at a cost of around $2,500 for the aforementioned holidays. That is as far back as I can go and still account for the number of individuals positively impacted by this program and at what cost to the chapter for a particular year.)$0$3,367
The third "typically" expense driven program is our Esquire Leadership and Mentoring Program (ELMP). I previously mentioned that TZL is part of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Since its establishment in 1906, it has been about the "better making of men". This ELMP completes the triangle of some of the main goals of TZL and our national organization. The ELMP is committed to the development of young black males (ages 12-17) academically, personally, and socially, with a focus on higher education and service to mankind. This program shut down when COVID 19 struck the world in March of 2020, and it was slowly reactivated in 2021 with virtual meetings taking place on nearly every second Saturday of the month during a fraternal year (which runs from September to the following June). I cannot provide a cost to the virtual meetings, nor were there outings or events that we could realistically take the young men on due to COVID 19 restrictions. The number of participants during that time was around 3-5 (those that would consistently show up to the meetings). As things began to open up even more in 2022, the ELMP was not funded due to other fiscal decisions and operating costs, as well as luke warm support from the members of TZL and low numbers of participants. To combat the absence of a line item in the TZL budget for 2022, 2023, and 2024, the ELMP Director, the Assistant Director, the Program Coordinator, and a handful of TZL brothers held face to face meetings, provided light refreshments at most of the meetings, and arranged for 1-2 outings per year (two examples of these outings included: (1) a few hours at a Game Room, because one member of TZL knew of someone that owned such a facility; and (2) a trip to the African American Museum in Detroit, Michigan, because a member of TZL had a connection to discounted tickets at the museum. The latter event cost roughly $200 for around 5-7 Esquires and 3-4 brothers to attend). These dedicated TZL brothers kept the ELMP alive by taking care of all the associated costs with their own money. The number young men that participated in the ELMP during the 2022 to 2024 time frame fluxuated from 3-7. At our preliminary ELMP meeting back in May of 2025, we set a record of 14 young black males sitting in the room ready to join the ELMP for the 2025-26 fraternal year. To build on that momentum, we will be hosting our ELMP Kickoff Meeting on October 11, 2025, and the calendar of events and meetings can be viewed on our website: Annarboralphas.org . The budget for the ELMP for this upcoming fraternal year has been set to $3,800. The members of TZL Chapter are invigorated and a majority of them have voiced a strong commitment to supporting this mentoring program. The TZL Brotherhood is ready to engage and work with these young men through the ELMP in order to have a long-lasting and positive influence on them. We plan to accomplish this by carrying out the Mission and Vision Statements described in our ELMP.$0$0

Chapter liability insurance and delegate tax, Regional tax, District tax, Scholarship Program, Caring and Sharing Program, Life Membership payment to the National Organization, Regional Convention delegates, facility/hall/room rental fees including, but not limited to: meals/catering, service charges/waitstaff, photographer, decorations, audio/visual services, entertainment/DJs, occasional plaques and awards, etc., for events such as the Black and Gold Gala, Student Recognition Dinner, Founders' Day Brunch, First Initiation Banquet, etc.

Form 990-EZ, Part I, Line 20

I apologize for the discrepancy between the numbers from Part I, Line 21, and Part II, Column B of Line 27. Our organization did not file this Form 990-EZ as we were under the impression from a long standing practice of just filing the 990-ePostcard. Since this is TZL Chapter's first time file this Form 990-EZ, I would also like to apologize for not having a number in 2023 to compare to the number requested for Part I, Line 19 for 2024.

Our sources of income are from contributions/donations, membership fees, and gross receipts from activities related to our exempt functions, as stated in Part I, Line 10.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1I apologize for the discrepancy between the numbers from Part I, Line 21, and Part II, Column B of Line 27.

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0For several years, the Treasurer of TZL Chapter was informed by a previous treasurer that for tax purposes, all that needed to be filed with the IRS was a 990-ePostcard. This practice started in the years when we did not have more that $50,000 in revenue streaming into out bank accounts. My position as TZL Chapter Treasurer started in September of 2024, and officially ended in June of 2025, the end of a typical chapter year (by default, I am also going to be Treasurer for the 2025-26 year as well). As I looked into filing another 990-ePostcard, it quick became quite clear that since we made over $50K for the 2024 tax year, I could no longer file the very brief 990-ePostcard. Instead, I began to look at filing the Form 990-EZ (an thankfully not the longer Form 990) in the last week of March/first week of April 2025, and realized that I had quite a bit of information to gather before I could start making sense of filing the Form 990-EZ. I filed an 8868 Extension Form with the IRS on either May 8th or 9th of 2025, and that was a true blessing. Filing that extension form gave me the time that I needed to get this the information necessary to complete this Form 990 and two of the required Schedules (A and O) that must accompany a Form 990-EZ. Even though this is my first time ever filing tax forms, I have really made significant efforts to answer all the questions in the Form 990-EZ and Schedules truthfully, and to the best of my ability. This was all done in conjunction with a basic, rudimentary understanding of the 990-EZ form and Schedules A and O, as well as my knowledge and understanding of being TZL Chapter Treasurer for the first time. It has been, in many instances, a "trial by fire". I know there are unknown errors and mistakes in the filing of this tax paperwork, but that is purely a result of ignorance, and not of an intent to deceive or mislead in any way. At this point, I can only hope and pray that there are not too many errors. I do plan to start the 2025 tax filing season much earlier (as in months earlier), so that I will not have to file 8868 Extension Form, and be able to turn in that set of tax paperwork before April 15, 2026.
