Mission

Alea bridge was founded in january 2016, with a mission to empower people in need to achieve self-sufficiency through genuine compassion and innovative, community-based solutions. We have a vision of reducing homelessness on oahu through the delivery of quality, comprehensive services and effective partnerships; continually striving to break the cycle, and reverse the trend of homelessness. With values of compassion, commitment, respect, and integrity, we serve as the bridge that connects those in need to the resources and assistance necessary to rebuild a life of hope, purpose and success.

ALEA Bridge's primary purpose and function is to connect the homeless, and those at risk of becoming homeless, to the resources available to restore a sense of hope, purpose, and success in their lives. We assist anyone needing and wanting help to find, qualify for, obtain, and sustain a housing solution for their needs. Our mission is empowering people in need to achieve self-sufficiency through genuine compassion and innovative, community-based solutions.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

Joel Bongco, President, and Mary Ann Bongco, Director, are married. Madonna Sisson, Co-Founder and Secretary, is married to Garrett Sisson, Co-Founder and former Director, who was hired as an independent contractor to perform accounting generalist services on a part-time monthly basis. Madonna Sisson is also sister to Augustus "Phil" Acosta who was Executive Director until September 29,2019.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 3

Garrett Sisson was hired as an independent contractor to perform accounting and financial services on a part time monthly basis. His duties include preparing budgets, tracking grant revenue and expenses, categorizing and preparing transactions for our bookkeeping service, preparing financial reports for the Board of Directors, preparing and filing federal and state forms and submissions, and assistance with fundraiser budgets and planning, among other financial services. He invoiced $23,025.84 total for the 12 monthly invoices and was paid $14,648.88 in 2019 (remainder to be paid in 2020).

Our Bylaws require the Form 990 to be reviewed by the Directors prior to filing. We will email a complete copy to all Officers and Board Directors prior to filing. All are to review the Form 990 in its entirety and provide feedback/suggestions for any omissions, errors, incorrect statements, or any other necessary changes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

All Directors and key employees are required to disclose any possible conflicts before key decisions or discussions take place. All Directors and the Executive Director are required to notify the Board, and all key employees are required to notify the Executive Director, of any possible conflicts of interest in writing annually and as they arise. The conflicted parties are not allowed to participate in discussions, votes, or hiring processes wherein a conflict may exist.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

On Sept 14, 2019, Phil Acosta, Executive Director (ED) of ALEA Bridge (AB) resigned. AB took the following steps to fill the vacant ED position. AB posted the ED position internally and externally via HANO, Indeed, and Linkedin online job boards on Sept 29, 2019. Concurrently, an Executive Director Search Committee was formed which included current and former AB board members as well as AB founder Joe Acosta. 38 candidates inquired and was reduced down to 3 top candidates: (2) external and (1) internal candidate via the selection committee. The AB board reviewed candidate qualifications and budget constraints. In consideration of all these factors, the AB board concluded that Nicole Winter, internal AB candidate was the best choice given her AB experience, domain knowledge and salary requirements. On, Nov 15, 2019, the AB Board extended an offer to Nicole Winter for the position of Executive Director. On Nov 20, 2019, Nicole Winter accepted the position of AB Executive Director.

IRS990/Desc0State Grant-In-Aid Wahiawa Hale o Maluhia (HoM) Proram establishes a community hub for holistic homeless services, onsite amenities, and emergency housing options. HoM incorporates a person-centered, harm and trauma reduction approach that will provide low barriers to program entry; provide food, clothing and other basic needs; access or referral to supportive services; assist with substance abuse and mental health resources as needed; and uses housing first to provide clients who desire housing with options to place them into housing as quickly as possible. Funds cover direct client services and onsite amenities for the at-imminent risk and homeless population of Central Oahu-North Shore-Mililani, Aiea-Pearl City- Waipahu-Ewa- Kapolei and neighboring communities.
