Profile

ANIMAL SHELTER/ANIMAL RESCUE, TNRThe Cedar Creek Sanctuary is located in the town of Fonda, Iowa with a current population of 636. The sanctuarys mission as a no kill shelter is to rescue injured and special needs cats off the streets of our community and to provide the necessary vet care for them so that they can eventually be adopted into forever homes. This goal is carried out daily at the shelter which houses in a cage free environment twenty to thirty cats at any one time. We also engage in a trap-neuter-release program to control the cat population which has prevented 100s of new cats populating the streets. A group of community volunteers assists with the trapping and ongoing care of feeding and providing shelter for the feral cats. Our small shelter annually operates on $10,000-20,000 per year, entirely run by volunteers with no paid employees. We have filed faithfully every year on the 990N ePost card. Our board of directors offer a wide variety of views and talents. Board mem

Our small shelter annually operates on $10,000-20,000 per year, entirely run by volunteers with no paid employees. We have filed faithfully every year on the 990N ePost card. Our board of directors offer a wide variety of views and talents. Board members include a teacher, a secretary, an artist, a health care professional and a lawyer.During the years surrounding the pandemic, our support was lower. Visitors coming to the shelter did not happen. Many of our college student volunteers were no longer on campus, conducting classes remotely, so we missed their help as well. Most of our public fund raisers were canceled due to the Covid outbreak. So, in order to continue our mission of animal rescue, a concerned donor during those years put just enough money into the shelter account to cover our basic expenses. We did not realize that the money, while continuing our mission, lowered our public support calculations. Now in 2025 we have once again increased visitors to the shelter and thus increased adoptions and public donations. Although our public support average for the past five years dropped to 25%, our current support for 2025 is back up to 81.5%. This was accomplished with a variety of public fund-raisers. A large community garage sale in August brought in major public support, donations and a welcome income for the shelter. Our pet photo contest in October was well-received and a success. This fund-raiser brought significant community support and involvement from local and area businesses. Those participating in the event by showcasing posters and voting jars or offering prizes were the First Community Bank in both Fonda and Newell, Caseys in Fonda, Highway 7 cafe, Pizza Ranch in Storm Lake, Fonda City Hall and Lake View Vet Clinic in Lake View, Iowa. Another fundraiser in November involved fourth and sixth grade students in the creation of Rock Critters which we adopted out for an adoption donation. Students not only made the rock animals, they also gave them extra personalities by writing descriptions for each animal. The Rock Critters became part of our own craft show agenda combined with two other non profit organizations, the Fonda Arts Center and the Fonda Garden Club. This was profitable for the shelter and a great education for the students and parents, who were educated in the steps of rescuing, caring for and adoption of rescued cats. A project such as this was valuable in creating more public awareness and more community involvement. Public awareness of the critical need to spay and neuter animals to prevent the over 70-80 million cats that exist today is a major part of our mission. Our director continues to speak at local events, emphasizing the importance of this spay/neuter effort. Using a large jar filled with colorful M and Ms, she demonstrates to listeners the number of abandoned cats that one spay/neuter can prevent. The programs she offers are reinforced with a power point presentation.Ongoing donations are achieved with donation jars at various locations, and redeemable cans and bottles from community members are an increasing source of income for the shelter. Our efforts, as mentioned, have brought our public support calculation for 2025 up to 81.5% and our goal is to
