Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Sra empowers students facing systemic barriers to define and find success through their education, career, and in life. We envision a world in which every person can achieve economic and social equity. Our college completion and workforce (continued on schedule o) development programming helps students realize their potential by guiding and supporting them through their senior year of high school, college, and into the workforce. This programming consists of three pillars: a one-on-one advising program, a technology-based social enterprise tool that provides an online resource for students and partners nationwide, and a virtual advising program.

Students rising above began as a scholarship program in 1998, and expanded into a comprehensive year-round program that provides college readiness support, tutoring, one-on-one mentoring, summer internships, career coaching and job training, access to healthcare, and financial assistance. Students are selected during their junior year of high school and work with a professional sra advisor for 5+ years from high school, through college, and into the workforce. 90% of sra students graduate from college; 87% of sra alumni are in career-ladder jobs or graduate school within 12 months of college graduation. In 2014, sra launched its college2careers hub, a free online student community that leverages technology and provides 24/7 personalized support to nearly 8,000 low-income students. Students have access to resources, a community of peer support, and online sra advisors who answer questions along the critical pathway from high school through college and into the workforce.

IRS990/MissionDesc0THE STUDENTS RISING ABOVE (SRA) COMMUNITY IS DEDICATED TO IMPACTING THE FUTURE THROUGH THE CULTIVATION OF EXTRAORDINARY YOUTH. SRA INVESTS IN LOW-INCOME, FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO HAVE DEMONSTRATED A DEEP COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION AND STRENGTH OF CHARACTER IN OVERCOMING TREMENDOUS ODDS OF POVERTY, HOMELESSNESS AND NEGLECT. WE HELP EACH STUDENT TO REALIZE HIS OR HER POTENTIAL BY GUIDING AND SUPPORTING THE STUDENT THROUGH COLLEGE GRADUATION, AND INTO THE WORKFORCE. OUR GRADUATES ARE BREAKING THE CYCLE OF POVERTY WITHIN THEIR OWN FAMILIES, SERVING THEIR COMMUNITIES, PROVIDING A NEW GENERATION OF EMPLOYEES AND LEADERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS, AND ACCELERATING POSITIVE CHANGE.
