Profile

The students rising above (sra) community is dedicated to impacting the future through the cultivation of extraordinary youth. Sra invests in low-income, first generation college students who have demonstrated a deep commitment to education and strength of character in overcoming tremendous odds of poverty, homelessness and neglect. We help each student to realize his or her potential by guiding and supporting the student through college graduation, and into the workforce. Our graduates are breaking the cycle of poverty within their own families, serving their communities, providing a new generation of employees and leaders from diverse backgrounds, and accelerating positive change.

Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Sra empowers students facing systemic barriers to define and find success through their education, career, and in life. We envision a world in which every person can achieve economic and social equity. Our college completion and workforce (continued on schedule o) development programming helps students realize their potential by guiding and supporting them through their senior year of high school, college, and into the workforce. This programming consists of three pillars: a one-on-one advising program, a technology-based social enterprise tool that provides an online resource for students and partners nationwide, and a virtual advising program.

Sra empowers students facing systemic barriers to define and find success through education, career, and in life, with college completion and workforce development programming that supports them through their senior year of high school, college, and into the workforce.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The form 990 is reviewed by the chief executive officer, the director of finance, the board treasurer, and the audit committee chair. A copy of a completed document is sent to all members of the board.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Officers and directors are required to review and sign a detailed "statement of interested transactions and relationships and disclose any potential conflicts of interest as defined in the organization's conflict of interest policy. These statements are reviewed by board leadership and senior management for accuracy and any potential interested transactions. If a transaction poses a potential "conflict of interest" under sra board policies, the executive committee shall review the transaction and approve or disapprove its consummation as provided by the policy.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The executive committee of the board reviews and approves the compensation of the chief executive officer. Comparable survey data provided from an independent third-party research firm is used to review the compensation levels of similarly qualified individuals from comparable organizations. Contemporaneous documentation and recordkeeping with respect to deliberations and decisions regarding the compensation agreement is maintained. If other officers and key employees are employed and compensation decisions are required, the executive committee also approves the recommendation from the chief executive officer regarding the compensation of such individuals. Data from an independent research firm is used to guide the compensation determination for such other officers and key employees. There were no such individuals employed by the organization during the fiscal year.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements are available to the public. Requests for such information can be made online through the organization's website or by mail.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is exempt from paying federal and state income taxes under internal revenue code section 501(c)(3) and by the california revenue and taxation code under section 23701(d). Accordingly, no provision has been made for such taxes in the accompanying financial statements. Each year, management considers whether any material tax position the organization has taken is more likely than not to be sustained upon examination by the applicable taxing authority. Management believes that any position the organization has taken is supported by substantial authority and hence does not need to be measured or disclosed in these financial statements.
