Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Special ops survivors advances the mission "to embrace and empower surviving spouses of fallen special operations heroes to build healthy post-loss futures as they transition and rebuild their new lives." the foundation provides programs specifically designed to a) empower and educate, b) build and enhance resiliency, c) improve health and wellness, d)fund education and career advancement, and e) offer financial assistance for unexpected expenses.

See schedule oeveryday special operations personnel from the army, navy, air force, and marines train and engage in missions around the globe out of the public eye. Even when large scale military operations cease, their work continues. And sadly, many have made the ultimate sacrifice in giving their lives for our country. They leave behind a legacy of honor, sacrifice, and commitment, as well as their surviving spouses and families. Special ops survivors is the only nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering surviving spouses of active duty special operations personnel who have died in combat or training since january 1, 1980 - the year when the special operations command was formed.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The form 990 is prepared by schafer, tschopp, et al., the organization's auditing firm. The board treasurer and the executive director review a draft of form 990. Upon completion of their review, a copy of form 990 is made available to the entire voting members of the organization's governing body for review and comment before filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Each director, principal officer, and key employee shall annually sign a statement which affirms such person: has received a copy of the conflicts of interest policy, has read and understands the policy, has agreed to comply with the policy, and understands the foundation is a public charity and in order to maintain its federal tax exemption it must engage primarily in activities which accomplish one or more of its tax-exempt purposes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The board of directors reviews the compensation of the executive director. Annually, the board uses a review of comparable data from similar non-profit organizations policies to set compensation.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization has adopted provisions of the income tax topic of the asc. These provisions clarify the accounting for uncertainty in tax positions and prescribe guidance related to the financial statement recognition and measurement of a tax position taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. The tax benefit from an uncertain tax position is only recognized in the statement of financial position if the tax position is more likely than not to be sustained upon an examination, based on the technical merits of the position. Interest and penalties, if any, are included in expenses in the statement of activities. As of december 31, 2018, the organization had no uncertain tax positions that qualify for recognition or disclosure in the financial statements. The organization's income tax returns are subject to review and examination by federal authorities. Since the organization's income tax filings are subject to audit by federal taxing authorities, generally three years after they are filed, the organization is no longer subject to examinations by federal taxing authorities for the years ended before december 31, 2015. In addition, there are currently no pending income tax examinations by federal taxing authorities. The organization is exempt from federal income tax under provisions of section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. In addition, the organization has been determined by the internal revenue service not to be a private foundation within the meaning of section 509(a) of the code. Consequently, no provision for income taxes has been included in the accompanying financial statements.
