Freedom for immigrants is devoted to abolishing immigration detention, while ending the isolation of people currently suffering in this profit-driven system. Ffi monitors human rights abuses inside immigrant detention centers through our national immigration detention

Community Initiatives for Visiting Immigrants in Confinement (CIVIC) is the national immigration detention visitation network, with 43 affiliated programs, working to end U.S. immigration detention through monitoring human rights abuses, elevating stories, building community-based alternatives to detention and advocating for system change.

We visit and monitor 43 immigrant prisons and jail, and we run the largest national hotline for detained immigrants.Through these windows into the system, we gather data and stories to combat injustice at the individual level and push systemic change.Visitation: Since 2009, Freedom for Immigrants (formerly CIVIC) has spearheaded the U.S. immigration detention visitation movement, helping to grow the cadre of visitor volunteers from under 100 at 4 facilities to over 2,400 at 43immigration detention facilities today. Freedom for Immigrants volunteers whether in-person or via the hotline are often the detained immigrants only window into the outside world. Visitor volunteers begin deep relationships with people in immigration detention, meeting weekly. Alongside helping them understand their rights, the volunteers also help connect them to attorneys and their families, who could be thousands of miles away.National Detention Hotline:Freedom for Immigrants national hotline is an important resource, connecting immigrants in detention to their family, resources, and abuse documentation support. Since 2010, Freedom for Immigrants piloted hotlines at various immigration detention facilities. We have now built a centralized national hotline, capable of answering calls from all immigration detention facilities to connect with our network of support and report rights violations. We receive thousands of calls from immigration detention facilities.Independent Monitoring:We have piloted and scaled our national on-line monitoring system, which is now being utilized by a growing number of our affiliated visitation programs. Freedom for Immigrants and its affiliated programs document, categorize, and verify to the extent possible human and civil rights abuses in immigration detention facilities across the country on a daily basis. Federal Civil Rights Complaints:a.)Visitation Access in Immigration Detention -In FY March, 2017, Freedom for Immigrants (formerly CIVIC) documented visitation access denials and restrictions in violation of federal policy at 14 facilities in 7 states. Freedom for Immigrants won written commitment from ICE for continued visitation access. Within 24 hours of filing the complaint, acting ICE Director Thomas Homan responded, indicating that ICE appreciates the work of CIVIC and other community-based visitation programs and that ICE has a strong desire to continue to facilitate CIVICs access to immigration detention facilities. b.)Sexual Assault in Immigration Detention In FY April 2017, Freedom for Immigrants (formerly CIVIC) documented over 33,000 complaints of sexual assault against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) component agencies in the last 6 years. Shockingly, the government only investigated less than 1% of these complaints. Freedom for Immigrants worked with Congressman Grijalva of Arizona and other representatives to draw attention to the issue and we continue to advocate for a long-term policy solution that will hold ICE accountable.c.)Medical Neglect in Immigration Detention - In FY May 2017, Freedom for Immigrants (formerly CIVIC) released a joint report with Human Rights Watch, documenting sub-standard medical care that contributed to the death of people in immigration detention.d.)Parole and Bond Denials under the Trump Administration In FY May 2017, Freedom for Immigrants sent a letter to DHS on behalf of 115 organizations, 23 legal representatives, and 69 faith leaders and other advocates documenting 805 cases at 37 immigration detention facilities of individuals who have been arbitrarily denied parole or bond since January 20, 2017. Alternatives to Detention:Freedom for Immigrants (formerly CIVIC) is building an alternative system to traditional detention that is more effective and less expensive than the status quo. In Septe

IRS990ScheduleC/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Direct: Freedom for Immigrants (formerly CIVIC) co-sponsored the Dignity Not Detention Act (SB 29), which Gov. Brown signed into law in California in October 2017. This law effectively freezes the growth of for-profit immigrant prisons in the state of California. The bill also prohibits cities and counties from entering into new, or modifying existing, contracts with private prison companies with the purpose of expanding immigration detention. And it makes California the first state in the country to require private immigrant prisons and jails to comply with open record laws.In addition, Freedom for Immigrants (formerly CIVIC) and the Immigrant Legal Resource Center consulted on and advocated for an amendment in Californias budget (AB 103).Gov. Jerry Brown signed this budget action into law in June 2017, and California became the first state in the country to put a moratorium on all new contracts between California municipalities and ICE for immigration detention expansion for the next 10 years.The budget action also gave the state Attorney General the power and resources to monitor all public and private immigration detention facilities in California. Indirect: We worked with our members to advocate for the passage of the Dignity Not Detention Act (SB 29) by doing research, writing Op-Eds, contributing to press conferences, and encouraging our members to support these laws.We consulted in the drafting of an amendment to AB 103.
