Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Equality charter school opened its doors in the fall of 2009 in the north bronx with a college preparatory academic program and a highly structured and supportive school culture. While the school is comprised of students from many backgrounds, it is uniquely designed to close the achievement gap in middle school and prepare students to be successful in college by focusing on the integration of goal setting, critical thinking and problem solving skills. The school's primary purpose is to provide educational services to the six through twelve grade students of community school district 11. Equality charter school was founded in 2009 to serve middle school students in co-op city, a high needs area in the bronx. We currently instruct 234 6-8th grade scholars mostly from bronx community school district 11, but also from manhattan and brooklyn. In august 2014, we began operating classes for students in the ninth grade.

Equality charter school provides a high level of academic rigor in a nurturing learning community that helps prepare scholars to be successful post high school graduation. We realize high expectations for staff and scholars by focusing on the integration of goal setting, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. As our scholars move through this progression, they develop into equality men and women: high school graduates who are college-ready and on a trajectory to lead productive lives, in the workplace and the community.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Any director, principal officer or member of a committee with governing board delegated powers, who has a direct or indirect financial interest, as defined below, is an interested person. In connection with any actual or possible conflict of interest, an interested person must disclose the existence of the financial interest and be given the opportunity to disclose all material facts to the directors and members of committees with governing board delegated powers considering the proposed transaction or arrangement.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The board of trustees determines the head of school's salary. Any such decisions will be captured in the board meeting minutes. Any changes to a staff member's salary will be approved by the head of school in writing or electronically and documented via a personnel action form. A copy of this form will be maintained in the employee file.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The school is required to file these schedules and policies with various state education agencies and in addition, the policies are part of the school's by-laws and manuals. The audited financial statements are due to the school's authorizer who makes this information available to the public.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The school follows the accounting standard for uncertainty in income taxes. The standard prescribes a minimum recognition threshold and measurement methodology that a tax position taken or expected to be taken in a tax return is required to meet before being recognized in the financial statements. It also provides guidance for derecognition, classification, interest and penalties, disclosure and transition. The school files informational returns in the federal and new york state jurisdictions. With few exceptions, the school is no longer subject to federal, state, or local income tax examinations by tax authorities for fiscal years before 2011. The school believes that it has appropriate support for the positions taken on its tax returns. Nonetheless, the amounts ultimately paid, if any, upon resolution of the issues raised by the taxing authorities may differ materially from the amounts accrued for each year. Management believes that its nonprofit status would be sustained upon examination. Should there be interest on underpayments of income tax, the school would classify it as interest expense. The school would classify penalties in connection with underpayments of tax as other expense.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE SCHOOL FOLLOWS THE ACCOUNTING STANDARD FOR UNCERTAINTY IN INCOME TAXES.
