Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Lead pittsburgh (lead) is a non-profit corporation founded to increase community understanding about issues relating to depression. Lead believes that depression can impact anyone in the community. The initial focus of lead was broad: to increase education and awareness about depression. Lead stressed the need to de-stigmatize depression. Lead has learned that 20% of college students present with depression. Concern for young adults resulted in lead's decision to focus on what could be done to make a difference for this population. College freshman face opportunity, excitement and challenge; launching a college career is fraught with excitement, transition, and change. Thus, it is a time of stress, which can lead to anxiety and depression.

Form 990-ez, Part III

Motivated to help young people, lead identified nationally respected research that recommended teaching resilience skills to young people to protect them from the development of depression. With the financial support from a number of foundations, lead developed score [student curriculum on resilience education]. This five-hour web-enabled course is designed to provide college freshmen with the opportunity to learn about, develop, and strengthen their own resilience skills. The initial development and piloting of score was centered in southwestern pennsylvania. The course has the capacity to be offered both regionally and nationally. Score is a research-based program designed to help young people protect themselves against the development of anxiety disorders. Lead strongly feels that focusing on prevention can benefit students and the community, saving the cost of human suffering as well as the financial burden. In 2016, lead modified score to develop core [curriculum on resilience education], which brings resilience education to the adult workforce. Language and examples specific to the college environment were changed to reflect experiences of adults in the workplace; and whereas score is an online-based curriculum, core is a workbook/paper based product distributed only in pdf form. Resilience, or the ability to adapt to adverse or changing circumstances, is an essential skill for everyone to develop. The work environment is a critical place for cultivating resilience as employees navigate the challenges that come with high-stress professions. Many of today's employees are not prepared for these challenges, and the resulting stress negatively impacts their work, putting them at risk for mental health issues, substance abuse, and other harmful effects. Research suggests teaching resilience skills can help prevent these negative outcomes, help employees get the most out of their work experience, and equip them to lead productive and fulfilling lives. When professionals develop the resilience to successfully handle the challenges they encounter at work, their health improves, along with their productivity and retention rates. The core program provides employers with everything they need to conduct personalized, engaging resilience education with employees. Lead believes that resilience education in the workplace can help employers with staff retention-especially in environments of high stress, frequent change, intense public/client contact and burn-out potential. Core is designed for a wide range of industries and applications, including: -medical and behavioral health care settings -hospice centers -first responder workplaces -companies with a robust employee assistance program (eap) -direct practice and nonprofit workplaces where social workers and counselors are employed -msw (masters of social work) and counselor ed programs -nonprofit workplaces where employees serve challenged populations

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4MOTIVATED TO HELP YOUNG PEOPLE, LEAD IDENTIFIED NATIONALLY RESPECTED RESEARCH THAT RECOMMENDED TEACHING RESILIENCE SKILLS TO YOUNG PEOPLE TO PROTECT THEM FROM THE DEVELOPMENT OF DEPRESSION.
