Purpose of the foundation: the foundation is organized exclusively for cultural and educational purposes within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. Such cultural and education purposes shall include but not be limited to the teaching of classical japanese dance and the playing of japanese instruments such as the samisen and tsuzumi (hand drum). In an effort to perpetuate the classical japan dance and the playing of classical japanese instruments in hawaii, the foundation provides dance and instrument recitals to the public free of charge. In an effort to maintain the level of standard of these performances, professional dancing and musical instructors of the hanayagi school in japan are brought in to teach, assist and augment the "kai" (formal recital). In the past, the expenses for these teachers, as well as the production cost, have been the sole responsibility of the students of the hanayagi dancing academy. Yearly hanayagi academy sponsored recitals are performed at the beginning of the year and a "kai" sponsored by the academy every four years to the public. The academy also performs yearly at the japanese chamber of commerce new year's celebration, as well as at numerous other japanese cultural activities. Such performances have included performing at the japanese embassy in honolulu and at numerous temples. On an average, the academy students perform at least 6 times during the year in full formal kimomo dress before the general public. However, at no time do the students of the academy or its teachers receive any fee for their performances. The students and teachers who range in age from 3 to 70+ years old are dedicated to the perpetuation of this japanese art form which goes back hundreds of years in japanese history. With declining enrollment of the students and the rising cost of putting on these free performances and "kai", it has become incumbent upon the academy to seek outside grants and donations to supplement this effort to preserve this aspect of the japanese culture.
