“Lasting friends supports the mission of cantera by promoting the integral development of all people through the methodology of popular education by cultivating a solidarity network that encourages people to share their talents, time and treasure, and by strengthening financial stability through fundraising, grant writing and endowment funds.”

“In 2021, at the request of cantera, a nicaraguan ngo, friends of cantera established an escrow account to hold temporarily, canteras funds, ie the cantera escrow. The funds had previously been held by cantera in its own account in hancock whitney bank in houston in order to receive grants from us and european foundations. The cantera escrow account was made necessary due to two changes first, hancock whitneys decision to cease business with nicaraguan-based organizations that year and, second, that year also, the nicaragua government began to close forcibly almost all ngos operating in nicaragua and to confiscate their assets. Canteras legal status was suspended by the government in 2022. At the request of the officers of cantera, friends of cantera continues to maintain the cantera escrow in order to shelter it from unlawful confiscation and, upon written instructions from the officers of cantera, make distributions discreetly to support whatever on-going charitble programs of cantera remain possible.”

THE CANTERA ESCROW ACCOUNT WAS MADE NECESSARY DUE TO TWO CHANGES FIRST, HANCOCK WHITNEYS DECISION TO CEASE BUSINESS WITH NICARAGUAN-BASED ORGANIZATIONS THAT YEAR AND, SECOND, THAT YEAR ALSO, THE NICARAGUA GOVERNMENT BEGAN TO CLOSE FORCIBLY ALMOST ALL NGOS OPERATING IN NICARAGUA AND TO CONFISCATE THEIR ASSETS. CANTERAS LEGAL STATUS WAS SUSPENDED BY THE GOVERNMENT IN 2022. AT THE REQUEST OF THE OFFICERS OF CANTERA, FRIENDS OF CANTERA CONTINUES TO MAINTAIN THE CANTERA ESCROW IN ORDER TO SHELTER IT FROM UNLAWFUL CONFISCATION AND, UPON WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE OFFICERS OF CANTERA, MAKE DISTRIBUTIONS DISCREETLY TO SUPPORT WHATEVER ON-GOING CHARITBLE PROGRAMS OF CANTERA REMAIN POSSIBLE.
