Profile
The waddell creek association in cooperation with california state parks provides public access to the coastal section of big basin redwoods state park. We showcase the environmental, cultural and historical gems of the seashore, marsh and lower forested area including many flora and fauna unique to these areas. We also support interpretive programs, outdoor classroom events and the new wilderness patrol project. Incorporating information on fire ecology, climate change and the interaction between humans and nature as well as highlighting the historical tending and foraging of indigenous cultures has been added to our overall education efforts. Our aim is to include everyone in this education as we are all citizens of this planet and every action (or non-action) affects us all. The interpretation of nature is vital if we are to make positive impacts for future generations.

“Program achievements (actual and proposed) 1) volunteers are making efforts to fill the positions/schedules available and park visitors have increased quite a bit. A training program for new docents is planned especially for fire ecology as the interest is still high for people both from this area and far away regarding the impacts of fire and climate change on the park. 2) we did not have salamander saturday as there was not enough support available. However, materials on the subject have been provided for regular visitors all month and wildflower weekend will hopefully make up for the loss. 3) water bottle filling station was approved. Parks will install it. 4) we have been increasing the amount of clothing items for sale; specialty designs for wildflower weekend. Window cleaner will come in late april. We'll wait until june to do the carpets. 5) wildflower weekend -sign-ups for walk leaders and other activities are in process. 6) website - the process of installing yootheme will begin in the next week or two. Then ross, at treetop web design, will do a tutorial with susan and erika. 7) spring newsletter - we'll mention birding (last sun. Of the month, 10am), wildflower weekend, the seasonal bridge, campground, and the hulda hoover event. 8) hulda hoover event - leslie has a walk scheduled with diane west-bourke for april 6 and will discuss the hulda event with her then. Judy has been in touch with mark hylkema and he has agreed to speak about the area's early inhabitants. Susan will contact sandy lydon. 9) nature journals for the hulda event were approved post-meeting. Wca will order them. 10) nature center 40th anniversary banner - to hang inside the center (above a window in the main room on the courtyard side)”
