“Our mission at literacy connexus inc is helping churches help people with literacy needs. Four million adults living in texas qualify for adult basic education-many of these need help with english language acquisition. We provide technical assistance, networking, and training to churches involved in helping this population learn to use the english language. Literacy connexus has been in existence for 12 years and builds on the work of churches that have addressed literacy needs in communities for many years.”

“In connecting churches with the people of communities, we also provide assistance and resources to promote family literacy as a whole. Our ready for school curriculum assists refugee families prepare their children for school. Texas receives more refugees than another state. Our program to prepare 3 and 4 year old refugee children for school is innovative and expanding. Through our what's for lunch? Initiative we support churches in providing access to books for children participating in summer meals programs. We have facilitated relationships between churches and persons living in public housing as well as other settings to help children with summer reading. Additionally, through our books for the border and beyond project we have helped churches provide more than three thousand beginning home libraries (bookcases and books). Our model for family literacy has been utilized in many settings in texas and beyond. We have partnered with the work of christian women's and men's job corps programs across texas to strengthen the capacity of adults to gain skills and re-enter the workforce. Through this project and all of our work we seek to help adults with literacy needs using the resources of churches in creative ways.”
