DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Houston's Texas Medical Center, the world's largest, is a leader in research and treatment for these devastating diseases. The TMC institutions previously grew through competition with one another, but future growth will require cooperation and collaboration. TexGen was created to facilitate collaboration between institutions and to help the TMC remain competitive for national funding from institutions such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH).We live in spectacular times. The human genome has been sequenced, and we have the technology to measure the genes and proteins of the body. It is time to steer the advances in technology toward conquering the common diseases that plague our public's health. TexGen has targeted heart disease, cancer and stroke because of their devastating impact on health and because of the existing strong tradition of excellence in the Texas Medical Center.Without TexGen, individual researchers working alone must establish working relationships with a hospital or clinic, identify and enroll enough individual patients to create a large sample base, and follow them up, which is difficult, time consuming, and expensive. TexGen is gathering tissue samples and data from a large population and then centralizing the resource into secure databases for all institutions to share. Because of TexGen, individual researchers in the Texas Medical Center have access to samples and data of sufficient size and quality to make them competitive for federal funding. To date, 30,000 samples have been collected from the five sites involved with TexGen. The TexGen database is now of adequate size to allow researchers to study the genetic abnormalities that cause heart disease, cancer and stroke and publish papers on their findings. Collectively, the researchers using TexGen samples have submitted and/or have already published dozens of research papers on their findings in prestigious scientific journals. As a result of TexGen, $45 million dollars from the National Institutes of Health have been awarded to TexGen scientists to continue their efforts to find the cures for these common diseases.--
