Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The organization has an audit committee that assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit and the selection of an independent auditor. The process has not changed from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

The museum's collections are made up of historical artifacts, works of art, books and other items pertaining to education, research and curatorial purposes. Each of the items are preserved and cared for and activities verifying existence and assessing condition are performed periodically. Collections are not recorded as assets in the consolidated statements of financial position. Purchases of collection items are reflected as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as decreases in temporarily restricted net assets if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Contributed collection items are not reflected in the financial statements. The museum has never sold an item from its collection. In the unlikely event that a collection item was sold or disposed of, the proceeds would be used to further the museum's mission.

PART III, LINE 4:

Description of organization's collections and how they further the organization's exempt purpose: hmh collections consist of a diverse assortment of artifacts, requiring multiple conservation needs. Examples of the many types of objects they care for are: a 1942 german railcar and danish boat which reside outdoors; paintings and work on paper made by holocaust survivors; daggers, bayonets, and sculpture; ceramic dishware and silver memorabilia items; leather shoes and holsters, uniforms, hats, and handmade tablecloths; original bricks from warsaw ghetto; microfilm and av materials; and numerous books, flat paper and archival items, photographs, manuscripts archives and two torah scrolls. The hmh collections are used to educate people on the holocaust and other genocides as well as teach the dangers of hatred, prejudice and apathy.

PART V, LINE 4:

Intended uses of endowment fund: endowment funds are intended to support the activities of holocaust museum houston including, but not limited to the following: educational programs, teacher education, conservation, lecture series, docent program, yom ha'shoah program, and child survivors.

PART X, LINE 2:

The holocaust museum records charges for uncertain tax positions when they are considered probable. Based on its evaluation, the holocaust museum has concluded that there are no significant uncertain tax positions requiring recognition in the financial statements.
