Activity 2

Gbf's conservation programs focus on estuarine habitat preservation, protection, and restoration. In 2012, gbf constructed a living shoreline project at the private property of mr. Fritz snyder on chocolate bayou, consisting of a 150-foot sacrete breakwater with smooth cordgrass planted behind. Gbf hosted marsh mania events in the spring with 225 volunteers planting four acres of estuarine marsh at the baytown nature center and again in the fall in celebration of the 25th anniversary of national estuaries day and the 40th anniversary of the clean water act with 178 volunteers planting 0.055 acre along the moses lake shoreline of the texas city prairie preserve. Gbf also hosted trash bash at bay area park with 748 volunteers, who collected 7,480 pounds of trash, 25 tires, and 2,440 pounds of reusable or recyclable materials from both land and waterways in the armand bayou watershed. Gbf continued the pilot oyster shell recycling program with tommy's restaurant by collecting over 50 tons of shell in 2012, and received a cmp grant to expand the program to allow for the participation of more restaurants. Gbf also treated invasive species such as brazilian peppertree, chinese tallow, salt cedar, and baccharis on our conservation properties.

Activity 3

Gbf's advocacy programs attempt to balance the multiple uses of galveston bay so that the long-term interests of the bay itself are not compromised. In 2012, gbf's wetland permit review committee continued its work for its 23rd year, reviewing 43 applications for u.s. Army corps of engineers permits and providing comment letters to the corps on 21 of them throughout the year. Gbf hosted, along with other organizations, the gulf coast water conservation symposium: the business case for water conservation with registrations by 120 individuals. Gbf developed clean water partnerships with marina del sol, the city of nassau bay, and ball high school as the first participants in our new water quality outreach strategy. Gbf launched its volunteer water monitoring team with 32 certified monitors at 29 sites around galveston bay, set up an on-site bacteria monitoring lab for gbf staff and volunteers to process enterococcus samples, and received approval the u.s. Epa for our volunteer monitoring quality assurance project plan (qapp). Gbf created the galveston bay action network (gban) (www.galvbay.org/gban), an interactive mapping tool that allows citizens to report water quality concerns. Gbf was also engaged to recruit, register, and train volunteers needed for non-hazardous roles during oil spill response.
