“| Explanation:| Optimist Club of Arlington TX 75-6036775 1 Supplemental Information to Form 990-EZ Part III Statement of Program Service Accomplishments The Optimist Club of Arlington Texas is one of the largest single Optimist Club in Optimist International. Its mottos Friend of Youth and Bringing Out the Best in Kids are exemplified in the various activities that it sponsors and varied programs provided available to more than 60,000 students living in Arlington and or attending school in the Arlington Independent School District. In addition to the many sports events oratorical competition essay contest scouting scholarships and recognition of outstanding AISD students,; it is also involved in many community projects such as the perpetual care of the original Arlington Cemetery 4th of July Parade Christmas Lights Parade and working with various Arlington Charities. There is constant opportunity for volunteer work for the more than 50 members. Sports events sponsored by the Optimist Club of Arlington are varied and the associated planning and support activities demand that the responsible persons are busy year round. There are approximately 26 teams in the youth baseball program which serves more than 200 youth between the ages of four and twelve during the spring and summer. Over 100 kindergarten through third grade students participate in the flag football program and over 100 fourth through sixth grade students participated on tackle football teams during the summer and fall. To be eligible to participate in the sporting programs the child must be a resident of Arlington surrounding suburbs or attend school in Arlington TX. The Optimist International Junior Golf Championship is a program for young people from ten to seventeen years of age. Winners from the Arlington tournament have their fees paid to the North Texas District Tournament. Travel and fees for the winners of the district competition are provided to the international tournament which is held at the Doral Golf Resort in Florida. Junior Olympics is an all-day track and field event held near the end of the school year. AISD students from the third through sixth grades are eligible to enter up to three of the eight individual events and the two team events. Medals are awarded for the top three places in each event. Ribbons are awarded for fourth through sixth place. Every student is given a participation ribbon. The events are divided into boys and girls divisions for each grade level. Optimist International sponsors an Essay Contest an Oratorical Contest and a Communication Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Approximately 200 AISD students participate in local competitions of these three contests. Club winners advance to Zone competitions and those winners advance to the North Texas District competition where two $2,500.00 scholarships are awarded for each different contest. The theme is chosen by the Junior Optimist Board of Directors and the presentations are uniform as determined by the contest rules set by the programs department of Optimist International. During the Optimist International Youth Appreciation Week the Optimist Club of Arlington recognizes outstanding students from each of the ten Junior High Schools and the six High Schools in the Arlington ISD at a banquet for the students their families and school teachers and administrators. In addition each senior student receives a $1000.00 scholarship to the college or university of their choice. In the spring the Optimist Club of Arlington awards up to three $1,500.00 scholarships to graduating seniors from an AISD high school that will be attending the University of Texas at Arlington or Tarrant County Community College. Also the Optimist Club of Arlington has established an endowed scholarship at the University of Texas at Arlington.
