THE COMMUNITIES SERVED BY MARSHALL HEALTH SERVICES (MHS) ARE MOSTLY RURAL IN NATURE, THE LARGEST CITY BEING MARSHALL-POPULATION 24,701-IN HARRISON COUNTY, TEXAS WHICH HAS A TOTAL POPULATION OF 67,746 RESIDENTS. CENTRALLY LOCATED TO THOSE WHO UTILIZE OUR MEDICAL FACILITY, WE ALSO SERVE RESIDENTS IN ADJACENT MARION COUNTY TO OUR NORTH, POPULATION 10,160 AND PANOLA COUNTY TO OUR SOUTH, POPULATION 23,766. ACCORDING TO THE 2015 CENSUS ESTIMATES, 18.5% OF THE HARRISON COUNTY POPULATION LIVES IN POVERTY. 15.5% OF HARRISON COUNTY RESIDENTS ARE AGE 65 OR OLDER. THE CENSUS BUREAU REPORTS THAT ONLY 18.6% OF ADULTS HOLD A COLLEGE DEGREE OR HIGHER LEVEL OF EDUCATION. THIS OFTEN IMPACTS THE AVAILABLE JOBS THAT CAN BE OBTAINED AND WHETHER BENEFITS SUCH AS HEALTHCARE ARE PROVIDED. IN OTHER AREAS OF OUR SERVICE REGION, MARION COUNTY HAS A MEDIAN ANNUAL HOUSEHOLD INCOME OF $35,152, AND 23.4% OF ITS RESIDENTS LIVE IN POVERTY. PANOLA COUNTY HAS A MEDIAN ANNUAL HOUSEHOLD INCOME OF $50,057 AND 15.1% OF ITS RESIDENTS LIVE IN POVERTY. UNEMPLOYMENT IN HARRISON, PANOLA, AND MARION COUNTIES IS CURRENTLY LISTED BETWEEN 5.2-6.5%. IT IS CLEAR THAT WITHIN THE AREA SERVED THERE ARE OBSTACLES TO OVERCOME. MANY FIND IT VERY DIFFICULT TO AFFORD THE COST OF HEALTHCARE SUCH AS IT IS TODAY-BOTH IN BASIC PREVENTION AND IN TREATMENT OF EXISTING AND CHRONIC ILLNESS. MHS OFFERS PRIMARY CARE GASTROENTEROLOGY, OBSTETRICS, UROLOGY, GENERAL SURGERY, OTOLARYNGOLOGY, PULMONOLOGY, PEDIATRICS, AND OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY SERVICES THROUGH THE EMPLOYMENT OF APPROXIMATELY 19 HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS. ALL PROVIDERS PARTICIPATE IN THE MEDICARE AND MEDICAID PROGRAMS AS WELL AS OTHER FEDERAL, STATE, AND LOCAL HEALTHCARE REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAMS FOR THOSE IN FINANCIAL NEED. THESE PROGRAMS ACCOUNT FOR A SUBSTANTIAL PORTION OF THE MARSHALL HEALTH SERVICES GROSS PATIENT REVENUE. MHS PROVIDED BOTH CHARITY CARE AND UNREIMBURSED SERVICES WHICH DID NOT QUALIFY FOR CHARITY.
