| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Since established in the early 1970s, the mission of the Day Nursery of Abilene is to provide affordable quality child care for a diverse community. In January 2020, the Day Nursery of Abilene opened a fourth child care center which was the result of a collaborative partnership and an expansion project in partnership with a local hospital and university to provide child care programming to address the needs of both entities. Opening it on January 20, 2020 was most definitely a highlight of the year. In February, Day Nursery held its second and a very successful Dueling Pianos fundraising event on Valentines Day 2020. Both of these activities were a great way to start off 2020! In March of 2020, the Day Nursery of Abilene like much of the world experienced the uncharted waters of maneuvering through the unprecedented times of a world-wide pandemic. With Coronavirus/COVID-19 cases hitting the United States, Texas and then Abilene, Day Nursery had to quickly develop its response. In order to assure that working parents had child care continued to be the position under which we operated. Closing was not an option we chose to consider, unless however any regulatory entities or others in authority required it. Soon there were new operating guidelines and statutory mandates that outlined a list of essential workers which only those could report to work each day, others were asked to stay home. Initially child care did not make the list of essential workers but was soon added knowing that families with young children who required child care services could not report to work without such. The Day Nursery of Abilene continued to meet the needs of all essential workers and remained opened. In addition, the Day Nursery centers as a child care provider for elementary age children during after school hours as well as during all school breaks and holidays were in the midst of a spring break child care program when the pandemic hit strong in our City. Schools extended spring break once, twice and then made the decision not to reopen at all for the last 2.5 months of the 2019/2020 school year. Day Nursery centers then provided full day child care vs. just after school care for these groups of children. In addition Day Nursery staff became home school teachers for these elementary age children. They prepared lesson plans each day for a mixed group of kindergarten through 5th grade students each day for 10 weeks so that these children could continue their learning through the end of the school year. Beyond that the child care for all other ages of children (starting at birth) continued on a full-time basis for all children of essential workers. Parents were no longer allowed in the centers but only in the entry way to sign in/sign out their children, additional staff were hired to help retrieve children from parents and take to classrooms and the reverse at the end of the day. Volunteers were also no longer allowed. Day Nursery of Abilene also invested in additional personal protective equipment for staff, sanitation efforts and equipment and screening supplies for all staff and parents up until the time they were allowed to enter the facilities. In the summer months, Day Nursery staff started wearing masks to continue every effort to slow down the spread of the pandemic and in the fall, children starting at the age of 3 years old and up were also asked to wear masks. Parents were then restricted by child care regulators to no longer enter the facilities for any reason for the remainder of the 2020 year. Staff had to receive and return them at the door. Day Nursery then invested in a communication platform (Hi Mama) to provide updates for parents throughout the day of their childrens activities including pictures each day. As a child care provider that made the decision to stay open to provide child care services, Day Nursery received additional funding to help absorb the costs of these additional expenses.
