Breakfast on the Bayou early morning, family-friendly birding tours were offered to highlight the rich and diverse habitat at Shangri La Gardens, home to both resident and migratory birds. On each date, a bagged breakfast catered by a local food vendor was provided. The breakfast was set up on the boat dock, allowing 120 participants to grab-and-go before boarding one of our pontoon boats. The education team facilitated a hands-on entomology-focused program for 14 Texas Master Naturalists. Activities included dissecting lubber grasshoppers, performing a log dissection, using insect nets to collect and study insects, and attending a short lecture on the characteristics that define an insect.CampsDuring spring break, Shangri La Gardens hosted three sessions of the Spring into Nature Camp for 3rd-5th graders. The 3-day camp gave participants the opportunity to explore the forest and swamps, track animal trails, and discover the wild side of Shangri La. During the summer months Shangri La's EcoRangers Summer Camps provided a unique educational experience for local students. Organized by the Education Team, these camps introduced campers to science and local natural history themes. In total, 410 campers participated in camp sessions.Curriculum-based School ProgrammingIn 2024, the Education Team led 14 different curriculum-based field trip programs, engaging 5,719 students, teachers, and chaperones. These programs, aligned with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills Standards, emphasized hands-on activities and immersive experiences to strengthen connections with nature. DOW generously sponsored all onsite curriculum-based programs. Additionally, 2,072 students, teachers, and chaperones explored the Gardens through self-guided field trips.Virtual ProgrammingThe Virtual Adventures! curriculum-based lessons engaged 1,707 students, with Shangri La Educators offering virtual guidance and post-video activities. Chevron Phillips generously sponsored the Virtual Adventures! classroom kits.Outre |
