| IRS990/Description | 0 | KIPP DC students are the hardest working young people in D.C., spending 40% more time in school than traditional students with an extended school day, week, and year. Our students engage in 8 hours of instruction per day, including 1 1/2 hours of math and reading and an hour of writing daily. Students also study science, social studies, orchestra, foreign language, computers, physical education, and character education. With the additional classroom time we provide, students have the resources they need to excel. KIPP DC has posted some of the highest academic growth gains of any school in the country. When students begin at one of our middle schools, they are typically two to three grade levels behind and scoring well below the state average on the DC-CAS. By the end of the fifth grade, they are on par with the state average, and by the end of eighth grade our students are scoring among the highest of any students in city, even compared with students from the wealthiest schools. On the 2010 DC-CAS, more than 70% of our seventh and eighth grade students are scoring proficient or advanced in both reading and math. We are nearly doubling the percent scoring proficient or advanced in four years. Thus far, KIPP DC has made progress towards reaching our vision to create and sustain the highest quality school system for the communities most underserved in Washington, D.C, having promoted five classes of eighth graders. Each of these students was accepted into one of his or her top five high school choices, including Andover, Deerfield Academy, Georgetown Preparatory, St. Albans, Madeira, and Sidwell Friends. Today, more than 350 KIPP DC alumni attend 75 different high schools, and have earned nearly $4 million in high school and college scholarships. KIPP DC has seen its mission come full circle as 100% of the founding Class of 2009 graduated from high school in five years. Eighty percent matriculated to college including schools such as Rice University, Howard University, North Carolina A&T, and Drexel University. More than 91% have persisted to their second year of college. Additionally, KIPP DC formed the Capital Teaching Residency (CTR) program, a yearlong teacher training residency created to increase the number of well-trained, high-quality educators in low-income schools. Through a partnership between KIPP DC and other high-performing DC public charter schools, CTR trains and supports individuals to become highly effective teachers. Just as medical residents train with experienced doctors in teaching hospitals, CTR residents train and learn alongside an excellent teacher working within a high performing charter school. The program is highly selective to ensure candidates with the greatest potential of success are chosen.Having just concluded its pilot year, CTR has shown initial success in teacher retention and provided evidence that its graduates are highly effective teachers, defined as teachers who make a year and half worth of student achievement gains in a single school calendar year. At this early stage in the program's history, the graduates have shown success closing the achievement gap. Of the graduates still teaching at KIPP DC, 100% are highly effective. From the year-end data available on teachers who are in their second full year as a lead teacher at KIPP DC schools (residency year 2007-2008), all have shown above-average (more than a year and half worth of growth) gains on standardized tests in their first year as the lead teacher. |
