Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of Engineering Ministries International (EMI) is to develop people, design structures, and construct facilities which serve communities and the Church. EMI's Vision is: people restored by God and the world restored through design.

Major Activities

Activity 2
From August through late October, 2011, EMI's Disaster Response program was actively involved in the drought and famine response in the Horn of Africa. Four separate volunteers were mobilized with two of our disaster response partners to assist with the efforts on the ground responsding to back-to-back record-breakingly dry rainy seasons in the region. For nearly two months straight, EMI volunteer civil engineers were on the ground helping rehabilitate water wells, restoring water sources, and developing rainwater harvesting plans to help mitigate future low-water years. As is common with many crisis situations, tensions were high on the ground. Desperate people fighting to survive led to old tribal differences resurfacing. EMI volunteers performed their work effectively and bravely amidst these tough circumstances - even having to evacuate by caravan with other aid workers under the cover of night in one instance. Fortunately, all volunteers returned home safely and with high praise from our partnering ministries for a job well done.
Activity 3
In early September of 2011, a team of nine civil, structural and electrical engineers were hosted on the Africa Mercy, Mercy Ships' floating hospital ship, in port at Freetown, Sierra Leone. Using the ship as a base, the team ventured out each day to perform assessments for the three primary government hospitals in the capital city. Having provided training for local medical care practitioners in West Africa for years, Mercy Ships came to the realization that the poor standards at local hospitals were undermining their training programs. So, as a part of their bold, new off-ship initiatives, they enlisted the help of EMI to assess each facility's utility systems for the purpose of determining what it would take to provide 24-hour water, power and sanitation at each site. The trip was an enormous success, with implementation of the EMI team's recommendations already underway at two of the sites. Two future trips are already planned as Mercy Ships looks to expand this program throughout West Africa.

IRS990/Description0EMI initiated designs for an additional 73 projects in 2011 in 24 countries around the world. These projects included designs for an orphanage in Uganda, an eye clinic in Gabon, a school in India, and responses to the drought in the Horn of Africa. More than 240 design professionals and over 60 interns donated their time and expertise to partner with EMI in providing designs for these projects. In February 2011, EMI mobilized 12 architects, engineers, and surveyors to Bluefields, Nicaragua to design the 3rd phase of a ministry center that provides after school programs. Most of the children who come have parents who are employed on cruise ships and absent from home for long stretches of time. Having constructed the first two designs that EMI did, EMI was asked to come back to master plan two additional sites and design the main community building on each site. The after school program brings practical help with homework and additional skills, but also helps provide stability to the lives of many children with often absent parents.
