Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The Orange Show Foundation preserves, promotes, and documents visionary art environments, provides opportunities for the expression of personal artistic vision and creates a community where that expression is valued. The Houston Art Car Parade is our most significant event and we maintain two visionary art monuments, The Orange Show and The Beer Can House, and a mosaic-inspired greenspace, Smither Park.

Promotion and preservation of visionary/folk art.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0OUTREACH: DURING THE 2017 SUPER BOWL, THE ORANGE SHOW CENTER FOR VISIONARY ART PARTNERED WITH NOBLE ENERGY AND VICE MEDIA TO BUILD INSTALLATIONS AT SUPER BOWL LIVE AND NRG STADIUM. WE COORDINATED THE CREATION OF THREE INSTALLATIONS: AN ART CAR WITH HOUSTON ARTISTS JULIAN LUNA AND MATHEW FRIES AND THE ENERGY INSTITUTE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS; A 13' TALL "ROBOT CHARIOT" BY METAL SCULPTOR MARK BRADFORD; AND A LARGE WEAVED METAL INSTALLATION OF 3 DUNES BY PATRICK RENNERT. AT NRG STADIUM, WE WORKED WITH AN ARTIST TEAM AND VOLUNTEERS TO PRODUCE A BEER CAN HOUSE INSPIRED INSTALLATION FOR BUD LIGHT. THESE MEMORABLE INSTALLATIONS WERE EXPERIENCED BY THE RECORD ATTENDANCE OF 1.3 MILLION VISITORS DURING SUPER BOWL LI AND PROMOTED COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND AN APPRECIATION OF LOCAL ART.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0OUTREACH: SMITHER PARK: A CREATIVE URBAN SPACE THAT HAS DEVELOPED WITH THE HELP OF ARTISTS AND FRIENDS. VISIONARY ARTIST AND BUILDER DAN PHILLIPS WORKED ALONGSIDE STEPHANIE SMITHER TO DESIGN THE PARK IN MEMORY OF HER LATE HUSBAND, JOHN H. SMITHER. JOHN AND STEPHANIE WERE LONG-TIME SUPPORTERS AND COLLECTORS OF SELF-TAUGHT ART, AS WELL AS BOARD MEMBERS OF THE ORANGE SHOW CENTER FOR VISIONARY ART. INSPIRED BY THE ORANGE SHOW'S PHILOSOPHY OF PROMOTING AND SUSTAINING SELF-TAUGHT ART, THE MOSAIC-COVERED PARK SERVES AS A TESTIMONY TO THE VIBRANCY AND CREATIVITY OF THE CITY OF HOUSTON.
