Mission

Educate people about United Nations role and impact

Our Chapter's mission is to educate people about the UN's role in international affairs and how it impacts individuals and communities, and to strengthen US support for this institution whose purpose is to promote social justice as the foundation for universal peace.

Program Services

The United Nations Association International Choir is a multicultural group of singers who inspire, educate, and bring joy to our audiences through world music. We perform international choral works in their unique styles and languages. We celebrate our cultural diversity as part of the greater Houston community through our collaborative environment of camaraderie, learning, and growth. The choir comprises over 100 singers, teenagers to octogenarians, who represent more than 30 national origins and 20 primary languages. The main season included three concerts, beginning in March with a special, full-length production sponsored by Cypress Creek Foundation for the Arts & Community Enrichment as part of its Promenade Series. In May, to demonstrate how the pop song of one era becomes the folk song of another, "Songs of Yesterday, Traditions of Tomorrow" paired a recent song with one from the previous century for each of nine countries representing four continents. December brought "Holiday Tapestry," featuring Argentine composer Ariel Ramirez's "Navidad Nuestra" (a telling of the Christmas story in songs from the different regions of South America), Broadway composer Robert Brown's modern setting of traditional songs, "Chanukah Suite," and complementary pieces from nine more countries. In addition to the main concert season, the choir performed at community events that included singing the national anthem at a Houston Aeros ice hockey game, being featured entertainment at the United Nations Association's annual dinner gala, and performing at the opening event of the city-wide Citizenship Month initiative. The main season concerts served approximately 1,800 people, while the community appearances reached another 7,000. In a letter celebrating the December concert, Houston Mayor Annise Parker commended the choir as "a fitting ambassador of international growth and friendship for the City of Houston," calling the ensemble "our singing global ambassadors."$0$47,476
The annual UN Day banquet featured as guest speaker the VP of Communications & Public Relations for the UN Foundation. The event celebrated the establishment of the UN, the accomplishments of the Global Classrooms program, the various UN -UNA programs, and featured a performances by the United Nations Association International Choir, Anjali Center for Performing Arts and the Abatarutwa Dance Group. The event aims to develop collaborations and partnerships between the UNA-HOU and area international organizations. In addition, the event helped to raise funds to support the ongoing operation of the chapter (over 150 area leaders, UNA members and guests attended).$0$9,437
For over 35 years, the Houston Area Model United Nations and, more recently, the Global Classrooms program engage area middle and high school students in the exploration of current world issues through interactive simulations and curricular materials. IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt0The United Nations Association International Choir is a multicultural group of singers who inspire, educate, and bring joy to our audiences through world music. We perform international choral works in their unique styles and languages. We celebrate our cultural diversity as part of the greater Houston community through our collaborative environment of camaraderie, learning, and growth. The choir comprises over 100 singers, teenagers to octogenarians, who represent more than 30 national origins and 20 primary languages. The main season included three concerts, beginning in March with a special, full-length production sponsored by Cypress Creek Foundation for the Arts & Community Enrichment as part of its Promenade Series. In May, to demonstrate how the pop song of one era becomes the folk song of another, "Songs of Yesterday, Traditions of Tomorrow" paired a recent song with one from the previous century for each of nine countries representing four continents. December brought "Holiday Tapestry," featuring Argentine composer Ariel Ramirez's "Navidad Nuestra" (a telling of the Christmas story in songs from the different regions of South America), Broadway composer Robert Brown's modern setting of traditional songs, "Chanukah Suite," and complementary pieces from nine more countries. In addition to the main concert season, the choir performed at community events that included singing the national anthem at a Houston Aeros ice hockey game, being featured entertainment at the United Nations Association's annual dinner gala, and performing at the opening event of the city-wide Citizenship Month initiative. The main season concerts served approximately 1,800 people, while the community appearances reached another 7,000. In a letter celebrating the December concert, Houston Mayor Annise Parker commended the choir as "a fitting ambassador of international growth and friendship for the City of Houston," calling the ensemble "our singing global ambassadors."

The event celebrated the establishment of the UN, the accomplishments of the Global Classrooms program, the various UN -UNA programs, and featured a performances by the United Nations Association International Choir, Anjali Center for Performing Arts and the Abatarutwa Dance Group. The event aims to develop collaborations and partnerships between the UNA-HOU and area international organizations. In addition, the event helped to raise funds to support the ongoing operation of the chapter (over 150 area leaders, UNA members and guests attended).
