| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Education and CommunityThe Houston Symphonys education and community activity is increasingly professionalized, expanded, and institutionalized. Chief of Education and Community Programming Pam Blaine leads a five-person team that manages an ever-growing slate of innovative offerings designed to reach specific sectors within Houston, both in breadth and in depth. 2015-16 saw the launch of an industry-leading Community-Embedded Musicians (CEM) initiative, with four musician/educators who spent 80% of their time serving the Houston community through 700 services at schools neighborhood centers, health care settings, and social service organizations. The CEM initiative is the first of its kind for a 52-week, full-time American orchestra, and has enhanced the organizations capacity to serve the community through programs like an intensive on-campus residency at Crespo Elementary School, in partnership with BBVA Compass and HISD, serving all 420 students in grades 3-5 to foster 21st-century learning skills through music education. Other programs include: eight high school residency programs; a new Music and Wellness Initiative which served patients at Texas Childrens Hopsital and HealthBridge Childrens Hospital with music therapy-inspired interactions; and an expanded 20-performance Student Concert Series which served 59,413 Houston-area students. In total, the Symphonys education and community programs served more than 97,000 students, and made the orchestras music available for low or no cost to more than 150,000 Houstonians. |
