IRS990/Desc0LEGAL ACTION: JUSTICE IN MOTION CONNECTED AND ADVISED LEGAL ADVOCATES ACROSS THE U.S., MEXICO, AND CENTRAL AMERICA TO ENSURE THAT MIGRANT RIGHTS DO NOT STOP AT THE BORDER. OUR LEGAL ACTION TEAM SUPPORTED 274 PROTECTION CASES, HELPING INDIVIDUALS FIND SAFETY THROUGH ASYLUM AND OTHER FORMS OF HUMANITARIAN IMMIGRATION. WE PROVIDED ADVICE OR CROSS-BORDER SUPPORT ON 11 CASES TO ENSURE ACCESS TO JUSTICE FOR DEPORTED MIGRANTS WHOSE CIVIL RIGHTS WERE VIOLATED AND TO CHALLENGE EFFORTS TO EXCLUDE POTENTIAL ASYLUM SEEKERS FROM ENTERING THE U.S. AND WE PROVIDED ADVICE OR CROSS-BORDER SUPPORT FOR 17 EMPLOYMENT CASES HELPING HUNDREDS OF MIGRANT WORKERS DEFEND THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING, WAGE THEFT, AND ABUSE. IN APRIL 2020, WE LAUNCHED A CRISIS INITIATIVE TO HELP EXPEDITE THE SAFE RELEASE OF CHILDREN FROM U.S. GOVERNMENT CUSTODY AND SAFELY REUNITE THEM WITH THEIR FAMILIES. OUR LEGAL ACTION TEAM WORKED WITH U.S. PARTNERS AND OUR DEFENDER NETWORK TO SUPPORT 68 CASES RELATED TO THAT CRISIS INITIATIVE AND CREATED A LIBRARY OF TRAININGS AND WRITTEN RESOURCES TO HELP U.S. ADVOCATES SUPPORT THE SAFE RELEASE OF COUNTLESS MORE CHILDREN. THE DOMINANT WORK OF THE PAST YEAR CONTINUED TO BE THE RESPONSE TO THE FAMILY SEPARATION CRISIS. OUR LEGAL ACTION TEAM CONTINUED TO PLAY A STRONG ROLE IN THAT CRISIS RESPONSE, WORKING WITH U.S. ALLIES AND OUR DEFENDER NETWORK TO SEARCH FOR AND SUPPORT "UNREACHABLE" PARENTS WHO WERE DEPORTED TO MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA WITHOUT THEIR CHILDREN.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0POLICY ADVOCACY: JUSTICE IN MOTION COLLABORATED WITH HUMAN RIGHTS ALLIES ACROSS NORTH AND CENTRAL AMERICA TO SOLVE THE SYSTEMIC PROBLEMS THAT THREATEN MIGRANT RIGHTS. WE CONTINUED TO EDUCATE POLICYMAKERS ON DATA TRANSPARENCY, TRAFFICKING PREVENTION, AND WORKER PROTECTIONS UNDER TEMPORARY FOREIGN WORKER VISA PROGRAMS. WE SHARED INFORMATION WITH 21 LEGISLATIVE OFFICES THROUGH REGULAR PHONE CALLS AND MEETINGS, AND WE WORKED ON TWO PUBLICATIONS THAT WERE COMPLETED IN OCTOBER 2020. THE FIRST IS AN UPDATE TO THE J-1 VISA PAGE IN OUR ONLINE RESOURCE VISA PAGES: U.S. TEMPORARY FOREIGN WORKER VISAS, THE LEADING RESOURCE FOR ADVOCATES AND POLICYMAKERS ABOUT U.S. MIGRANT LABOR PROGRAMS. THE SECOND WAS THE PUBLICATION OF THE CASE FOR TRANSPARENCY. THE CULMINATION OF OVER A YEAR OF RESEARCH INTO ABUSES UNDER THE TEMPORARY FOREIGN WORKER VISA SYSTEM, THE REPORT SHOWS THAT MAKING AVAILABLE THE DATA THAT THE U.S. GOVERNMENT ALREADY COLLECTS BUT DOESN'T SHARE IS A COMMONSENSE FIRST STEP TOWARDS ELIMINATING HUMAN TRAFFICKING UNDER U.S. TEMPORARY FOREIGN WORKER VISAS. WITH THE ONSET OF THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC, WE AND OUR ALLIES USED THE MOMENT TO RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF TEMPORARY FOREIGN WORKERS AS ESSENTIAL WORKERS. JUSTICE IN MOTION'S POLICY AND ADVOCACY MANAGER WROTE AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN TRUTHOUT, AND WE REGULARLY USED OUR SOCIAL MEDIA TO DRAW ATTENTION TO THE ISSUE, AND WE WROTE OR SIGNED ONTO SEVERAL LETTERS ANALYZING HOW PANDEMIC RESPONSE BILLS WOULD AFFECT TEMPORARY FOREIGN WORKERS. TO FURTHER ENSURE MIGRANTS ARE AWARE OF THEIR RIGHTS, WE PROVIDED TRAINING TO EMPLOYEES OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF MIGRANT SERVICES OF GUATEMALA ON WORKER RIGHTS IN THE U.S. SO THEY WILL BE ABLE TO BETTER PROTECT THEIR CITIZENS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0DEFENDER NETWORK: JUSTICE IN MOTION CONTINUED TO TRAIN AND COORDINATE A NETWORK OF OVER 40 HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS MEXICO, GUATEMALA, EL SALVADOR, HONDURAS, AND NICARAGUA, SO THAT THEY CAN BETTER SERVE MIGRANTS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. WE ADDED TWO NEW MEMBERS TO THE DEFENDER NETWORK AND BEGAN THE PROCESS OF IDENTIFYING AND VETTING THREE ADDITIONAL MEMBERS TO EXPAND CAPACITY IN KEY AREAS. WHILE THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC PREVENTED IN-PERSON TRAININGS AND CONVENINGS FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE YEAR, WE MAINTAINED ENGAGEMENT THROUGH REGULAR VIRTUAL MEETINGS, AND WE HELD NINE ONLINE TRAININGS FOR DEFENDERS. WE ALSO BUILT A NEW ONLINE SPACE FOR DEFENDERS AND JUSTICE IN MOTION TO SHARE UPDATES AND RESOURCES AND ENABLE MORE DIRECT COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION ACROSS THE NETWORK.
