Our work is centered in sulawesi, indonesiaone of earths most unique biological treasure-houses. At the invitation of local communities, alto forges partnerships to protect and restore imperiled species, tropical rainforests, and other natural ecosystems while supporting the dignity and self-sufficiency of local communities in a changing world. Schedule o - part iii, line 4ain 2024, alto continued to protect and restore maleo nesting grounds, native forests, sea turtle nesting beaches, and flying fox habitat at multiple sites accross the tompotika peninsula. Alto also continued active outreach to local people, government and mining companies, especially regarding the threats to nature and people from the global nickel mining boom.in 2024, alto also carried out the following specific activities, among others: selected, trained, and launched a new team of montora community rangers to help protect tompotika forests through montora, facilitated the shut-down of two major poaching rings purchased an additional 27 ha to add to the panganian nature reserve secured a 20-year conservation lease on the kaumosongi maleo conservation area extended the contract for another 10 years of collaboration with taima village on the libuun maleo conservation area provided free reading glasses as community benefits in two of our partner villages established a new partnership with a czech ngo for collaborative management of sea turtles, in combination with local people in partnership with local people, carried out two expeditions to document biodiversity and community relationships in remote parts of tompotikas forests established a program for providing private english instruction for all alto staff sponsored vegetarian cooking training for local women created a new curriculum and re-started school-based outreach activities for schoolchildren (that had been paused during covid) sponsored a maleo statue by indonesian sculptor to fulfill request by toweer village as a community benefit facilitated first illegal logging conviction in the tompotika region designed and distributed forests bring life, mining brings ruin t-shirts at the request of communities threatened by mining”
