“Horizon charter schools are using a system of data-based decision making to improve the academic achievement of all of our students. We develop personalized learning plans for each of our students using curriculum-based measurement and standardized testing information. We administer quarterly benchmark assessments on mathematics and english-language arts and twice yearly writing prompts. The results of individual student, program, region, and school-wide performance are routinely analyzed using a user- friendly tool called data director. Performance data from the star cst, celdt, cahsee, capa and cat 6 are also included in data director. Our teachers, principals, program coordinators and district administrative staff analyze these results by performance strengths and weaknesses. Students who performed in the basic range are encouraged to use the recommended strategic intervention curriculum and to enroll in small group instruction. Students scoring far below basic and below basic are steered toward intensive intervention curricula and/or direct instruction classes. We incorporate a response to intervention system including these and many other intervention strategies. We set annual school-wide academic achievement goals in mathematics and english-language arts. A comprehensive school-wide continuous improvement action plan is being implemented, monitored and revised, as necessary, for each academic achievement goal. Each department, program and region has also set academic achievement goals in these three areas and is implementing targeted strategies to achieve them. Compared to similar charter schools, horizon charter schools are performing higher academically.”
