Mission

The Friends Foundation International supports environmental safety, public health projects, and efforts to sustainably meet basic human needs around the world.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
In furtherance of its mission, Friends Foundation International (FFI) made grants to support public health, education, and environmental safety: **Eye Clinics and Care for Rural Nepalis** FFI supported the Delek Children's Foundation to conduct an eye clinic in the village of Chumling in the Himalayas.172 village people had eye exams, 17 cataract surgeries were performed successfully, including three women who were blind, (one women was totally blind and can now see) regular glasses and sun glasses were provided, shoes were distributed and food to the neediest were all provided free of charge to this Tibetan community. In addition, FFI supported the Charity Health Foundation to conduct eye exams, distribute glasses and provide eye medicine to students in Nepal. Students at nine schools were examined totaling 5,099 students, 207 glasses were provided and 804 students were provided eye medicine all at no cost to them. **Air Quality Monitoring** FFI supported LEADERS to continue their study examining how air pollution affects respiratory symptoms among children living in and around the Lumbini Development Zone ("LDZ") in Nepal. The study was expanded to include more schools and children and to obtain health effects data from 400 additional children and their mothers living in this area. The study recommends that a comprehensive air quality monitoring network be established in Lumbini and surrounding areas. **Fellowship Program** FFI supported the creation of a legal fellowship program to provide assistance to some of Nepal's brightest law students who recently passed their legal exams. The project is about promoting and strengthening the next generation of public interest lawyers to continue past efforts and take up new initiatives to address environmental, cultural, social and consumer justice issues in Nepal. **Assistance to Schools** FFI supported Lacrosse the Nations to expand its program to support an additional 10 students bringing its total to 50 children. This project funded school uniforms, shoes, and supplies to less fortunate school children in Nicaragua who cannot attend these programs as they are unable to afford the costs of school uniforms and supplies. The organization now has more than 100 volunteers at its project sites and is connecting with high school and college lacrosse teams throughout the USA. Strong improvements are being made academically by the students. **Clean Drinking Water** In Tanzania, FFI supported the installation of a water tank to the Monduli School, delivered pipes and supplies for a water tank to the Nanja School and initiated a well project at a more remote site. In Kenya, supported the purchase and installation of two 25,000 liter tanks and the construction of towers to support the tanks. **Reforestation and Organic Vegetable Planting** In Myanmar. FFI supported the purchase and planting of over 400 trees to combat climate change and to purchase organic vegetable seeds and starters so that 120 village families in four villages could grow healthy produce and sell the vegetables in the market to provide income for their families. Three community garden plots were also purchased with this funding. **Assistance to Asha Rising Women's Shelter in Kolkata, India** FFI supported Asha Rising to operate a shelter in Kolkata, India serving women who have been victims of abuse and trafficking. Funding was utilized to attend to the health and well-being of the residents. This included trauma counseling for 15 residents 3-5 times weekly, attending to the physical health needs of the residents that covered a hospital stay, a biopsy, two surgeries and funeral costs for one of the residents. **Youth Development** FFI supported Planting Justice's Food Sovereignty Youth Leadership Program giving youth interns, who are greatly impacted by poverty in Oakland's lowest-income neighborhood, $17.50/hour internships at Planting Justice's 2-acre organic nursery + farm. The youth interns maintained a 0% incarceration/recidivism rate over the past year, and they not only gained on the job training and up to $1,000 over a six week internship period, but also access to peer mentors, counselors and mental health support and access to organic produce that they themselves grow. In total, 60 youth interns completed the internship program.$78,810$0
