The mission of the California Native Grasslands Association is to promote, preserve, and restore the diversity of California's native grasses and grassland ecosystems through education, advocacy, research, and stewardship.

EDUCATION AND OUTREACHWe provide information to the general public through our website and by responding to information requests.We received and answered over 37 requests for complex information on grassland restoration techniques, management, conservation, urban landscaping, propagation and other questions covering a wide range of conditions in different areas within the state. Student Research Seminar Series Featuring GRASS Scholarship Awardees. Seven 1-hour on-line presentations on Tuesday evenings. Total Attendance: 153--

Over 600 attendees. Presentations by CNGA Directors Sarah Gaffney, Justin Luong and GRASS Scholars Rebecca Nelson, Katherine Brafford, and Joanna Tang- 2024 Range Camp at UC Elkus Ranch, Half Moon Bay, CA, January 16-21, 2024 for High school students. Instructor: CNGA Director Michele Hammond.- California Rangeland Conservation Coalitions 2024 Summit, Sacramento, February 23, 2024- 2024 Northern California Botanists Symposium, Chico State University January 8-9, 2024- 2024 SERCAL Conference, Redlands, CA, May 2024; Poster presentation: GRASS Scholar Nora Bales--
PUBLICATIONSGRASSLANDS JOURNALWe published three issues of CNGA's journal, Grasslands, with feature articles about native grasses, restoration, land management, current conservation efforts, and (of course) grassland habitat. CNGA members can opt for print or digital editions. Digital editions are available to all interested public on our website.GRASS BLAST! EMAIL COMMUNICATIONSWe sent monthly Grass Blast! emails to our with news on CNGA activities and events, conservation, current research, and news items relating to California's grassland ecosystems.--
CONSERVATION ADVOCACYThe CNGA Conservation Committee is committed to advocating for the conservation and restoration of native grassland ecosystems, including conservation of native grassland habitats as a part of the 30 by 30 initiative (protection of 30 percent of the earth's surface by 2030).The committee supported or participated in several specific conservation issues in 2024 including:- Tesla Park Classification Process continued support for Tesla as a State Reserve - U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announcing the proposal to list the monarch butterfly as a threatened species -California State Parks Heber Dunes SVRA Soil Conservation Plan review and comments- Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA Wildlife Habitat Protection Plan (WHPP) reviewed and submitted extensive comments. On July 10, 2024 - Antioch City Council Requested Discussion Item Potential Development of Policy on use of Native Plant Species for New Developments letter of support for the city's efforts to plant native plants on city grounds and new developments. - SB 675 (Limon) Prescribed Grazing Bill continued support; cleared legislative vote October 31, 2024. Now to the Governor to sign or veto.- Wright's Field, Alpine - support for conserving grassland habitat. Attended meeting Feb 9, 2024- Cal-IPC Advocacy call to CA Secretary Ross. Julia Michaels represented CNGA. This developed into several meetings with CalTrans, WCB, CNPS, Xerces, CARCD, RP and others to learn how state funding works among other things.--

IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt4CONSERVATION ADVOCACYThe CNGA Conservation Committee is committed to advocating for the conservation and restoration of native grassland ecosystems, including conservation of native grassland habitats as a part of the 30 by 30 initiative (protection of 30 percent of the earth's surface by 2030).The committee supported or participated in several specific conservation issues in 2024 including:- Tesla Park Classification Process continued support for Tesla as a State Reserve - U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announcing the proposal to list the monarch butterfly as a threatened species -California State Parks Heber Dunes SVRA Soil Conservation Plan review and comments- Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA Wildlife Habitat Protection Plan (WHPP) reviewed and submitted extensive comments. On July 10, 2024 - Antioch City Council Requested Discussion Item Potential Development of Policy on use of Native Plant Species for New Developments letter of support for the city's efforts to plant native plants on city grounds and new developments. - SB 675 (Limon) Prescribed Grazing Bill continued support; cleared legislative vote October 31, 2024. Now to the Governor to sign or veto.- Wright's Field, Alpine - support for conserving grassland habitat. Attended meeting Feb 9, 2024- Cal-IPC Advocacy call to CA Secretary Ross. Julia Michaels represented CNGA. This developed into several meetings with CalTrans, WCB, CNPS, Xerces, CARCD, RP and others to learn how state funding works among other things.
