“Activities for 2018: washington, dc - february 28, 2018 the u.s.-spain council held a breakfast reception on february 28, 2018 to celebrate its honorary chair, senator tim kaine, who received the grand cross of the order of isabel la catolica for his work to strengthen the ties between spain and the united states. The reception was attended by u.s.-spain council members, national organization representatives and senate staff members. Later that evening, an official reception was held at the ambassador of spain's residence where the award was given to the senator by then ambassador pedro morens. Mike henry, senator kaine's chief of staff, was also awarded a distinguished award that evening. The royal order of isabella the catholic is a distinction instituted by king ferdinand vii in 1815. On this occasion, the king of spain, felipe vi, granted this award to senator kaine in recognition of his almost five years of work presiding over the u.s. Side of the u.s.-spain council. September 29 - october 6, 2018 united states spain council young leaders program - the u.s.-spain council and the fundacion consejo espaa-eeuu launched the u.s.-spain young leaders program in 2001 to bring young american leaders to spain with the goal of familiarizing them with the social, cultural, economic and political realities of contemporary spain and, in so doing, fostering stronger understanding between spain and the united states. This year, ten young leaders from across the country were selected to participate in a week-long program in madrid and salamanca, spain. This trip serves as a wonderful opportunity to engage directly on the subject of economic and political u.s.-spain and u.s.-e.u. Relations. The program included a visit to the ministry of foreign affairs(where participants met with spain's secretary of state), open talks with the heads of the international and economic sections of el pais newspaper and a luncheon at the spanish parliament(where they met the heads of both major political parties). The trip also included visits to the u.s. Embassy in madrid, the u.s. Consulate in barcelona and the headquarters of financial institutions such as grupo bbva and la caixa savings. November 9 - november 11, 2018 the xxiii annual u.s.-spain council forum was held in jerez de la frontera, cadiz. The topics included: challenges and opportunities for cooperation between spain and the united states on africa and the mediterranean; smart cities: intelligent infrastructures and environmental sustainability; and the future of work, education and training in the age of artificial intelligence. Attendees included: josep borrell, the minister of foreign affairs, european union and cooperation; santiago cabanas, spanish ambassador to the united states; duke buchan iii, united states ambassador to spain; ambassador reuben e. Brigety; bernardino leon, former secretary of state for foreign affairs; luis castilla, ceo, acciona infrastructures; juan espadas, mayor of seville; senator tim kaine, honorary chair of the u.s.-spain council; rana sen, managing director of deloitte consulting llp; dr. Joan ferrini-mundy, president, university of maine; amd dr. Ed felten, princeton university.”
