DescriptionGrantsExpenses
ART IN PUBLIC PLACES promotes the work of local visual artists at more than 25 sites in area libraries, municipal offices, and businesses throughout the community. Artwork is changed 6 times per year at each location, offering Charlotte County residents and tourists access to 150 free art exhibits annually. Art exhibits include watercolor, oil, acrylic, traditional media, jewelry, digital art, photography, and more. Most of the pieces are available for purchase, benefiting the artist, Charlotte Arts, and the local economy. The annual Art in Public Place Reception is held to allow artists to show samples of their work and meet the host site coordinators. Chosen from Art in Public Places exhibiting artists, an ARTIST OF THE MONTH is honored with a proclamation by the Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners. The 178th artist was honored in July 2015.CALL TO ARTISTS are made available to artists throughout the year, including information about state and national exhibits, juried shows, residencies, and grants for visual artists and competitions, contests and residencies for writers. Weekly, seven CAF PHILO discussion groups meet to stimulate real dialogue about the larger questions of life. This is done in an informal setting for people wishing to share and learn from and with others. Topics range from money and media to robots. Cafs vary in size from 5 to 20 people and meet for approximately 90 minutes. Approximately 200 people participate weekly in these free philosophical discussion groups. Charlotte Arts has also advised other communities on starting their own Caf Philo programs. Charlotte Arts developed EXPRESSIONS: AN ART THERAPY TRAINING PROGRAM in 2009 to provide training and assistance to professional and family caregivers to help people with dementia express themselves artistically. More than 150 people have been trained at the Expressions workshops, which are given throughout the community free of charge. Leaders of the program developed a workbook that was published with grant funding from the Charlotte Community Foundation. The workbook is provided free within the county to those who attend the workshops and is sold elsewhere. Currently the program is being used in twelve local sites serving participants in adult day care, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes throughout the community. Charlotte Arts advocates for the preservation of ARTS IN EDUCATION by maintaining an open dialogue with the Charlotte County School Board and state representatives. Annually, Charlotte Arts sponsors awards for the countywide High School Art Show. The Council continues to act as the local REFERRAL SOURCE, providing residents and tourists with information through the Charlotte Arts website, which includes an ANNUAL CALENDAR of the arts and cultural events that are presented by its nearly 40 arts and cultural organizations. The websites ARTISTS DIRECTORY of nearly 150 artists of all disciplines lists artists by discipline and medium and links to their personal websites and/or e-mail addresses, providing additional opportunities to link the public with local artists. The nearly 400 Charlotte Arts MEMBERS are invited to the ANNUAL MEETING held in October.Beginning in January 2013, Charlotte Arts invited arts organizations to its CULTURAL ROUND TABLE to discuss areas of mutual interest, including marketing, ticketing, insurance, etc. The group has expanded and continues to meet bi-monthly. DANCING WITH THE CHARLOTTE STARS is the signature fundraising event for Charlotte Arts. Based on the popular TV show, skilled dancers from local studios are paired with local celebrities, who choreograph and rehearse for up to 10 weeks. Dances are showcased live at the annual gala, with dancers receiving dollar votes to raise funds for various Charlotte Arts programs. Nearly 400 people attend the annual event which is going into its 7th year.Local residents also have the opportunity to showcase their love of the arts by purchasing the STATE OF THE ARTS license tag. Proceeds of tags sold in Charlotte County are directed to Charlotte Arts for arts and humanities programs. The Arts & Humanities Council (Charlotte Arts) is a member of the Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce, Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce, Englewood Chamber of Commerce, Americans for the Arts, the Florida Cultural Alliance, and the Florida Humanities Council.$59,449$30,000
