Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To make a positive difference in the lives of children and their families by advancing literacy through enrichment and intervention programs.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The Better Basics Reading Intervention program works with elementary school students who are reading below grade level by providing individual attention in a small group format from a qualified teacher in order to improve their reading and comprehension skills. These sessions are conducted in small group settings, which allow the instructor to tailor the sessions to the needs of the students. These sessions occur three times a week for twenty weeks. The goal of the Reading Intervention program is to increase each students reading skills and to give the child strategies that will lead to classroom success and increased self-esteem. In the 2011-2012 fiscal year, students participating in our Reading Intervention program increased their reading skills and comprehension by an average of six book levels. The Reading Intervention program served 474 students. More than 40 volunteers and 27 teachers delivered service to participating students.
Activity 3
The MORE program encourages fourth-grade students to read for pleasure by providing students access to a library of age-appropriate books for classroom use. Children are encouraged to participate in the program and are rewarded with books and other incentive prizes correlating to milestones reached by the students. Teachers allow students to read selections from the MORE library and to complete book reports to demonstrate and help improve reading comprehension. Students earn a book for every book report that is completed, up to two books per week, throughout the program, allowing them to develop personal home libraries. The MORE program is responsible for putting thousands of books into the homes of students every year, and often a MORE prize book is the first book a student has ever owned. In the 2011-12 fiscal year, more than 1,900 fourth-grade students were served in the Better Basics MORE program. Classroom volunteers report that students read more than 23,500 books, and students were rewarded with more than 26,150 books for their home libraries. Volunteers provided more than 5,220 hours of support to students in the MORE program.

IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0Additional Better Basics programs include Schoolwide Enrichment, Ready 2 Read/Wise Words, and Special Projects that include Parent Camp and Birmingham Reads projects. The Schoolwide Enrichment program enhances the classroom experience through educational and cultural presentations delivered at participating schools. Many schools are being forced to eliminate their fine arts programs due to budgetary constraints, and participation in the Schoolwide Enrichment program provides these schools with a means to offer quality programming to their students in an affordable way. Exposure to culturally diverse programs has been shown to improve vocabulary, stimulate imaginations, and encourage creative use of language. Schools can choose from a wide range of cultural and academic programs. In the 2011-12 school year, the Schoolwide Enrichment program served a total of 10,460 students in 23 schools. A total of 268 arts, cultural and educational programs were presented to students across central Alabama. Ready 2 Read, a collaborative effort between Better Basics and Rotaract, and Wise Words, a similar program, endeavor to stimulate a child's imagination at an early age. Both programs provide a library of hardback books to participating second-grade classrooms, because research reveals that children become better readers if they are surrounded by books. Students track their reading progress and rate their favorite books in a book log provided by the program. Better Basics recruits community volunteers to visit each classroom at least twice a month to read a book selected by students, to review the book logs, and to award incentive prizes. More than 2,400 students participated in the Ready 2 Read/Wise Words program in the 2011-2012 fiscal year. Additionally, 133 high-need classrooms and students were rewarded with more than 6,000 incentive prizes for their reading accomplishments.Better Basics participated in several special projects during the 2011-12 fiscal year including Parent Camp and Birmingham Reads. The Birmingham City Schools Parent Camp offers parents resources on ways to incorporate learning activities into the home environment. The Birmingham Reads project is designed to provide quality reading materials for students in our community. In the 2011-12 fiscal year, the annual Birmingham Reads project provided more than 13,000 Kindergarten through fifth-grade students in Birmingham City Schools a new book to take home. Additionally, more than 700 community volunteers went into Birmingham schools with each volunteer visiting a classroom and reading the new book to students. A community book drive is also held in conjunction with Birmingham Reads, and this year, more than 25,000 books were collected to be distributed in low-income communities through the other Better Basics programs.
